Meet Kim Renner: Screenwriter, Freelance Blogger, & Yoga Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Renner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, what are you inspired by?
I have three main sources of inspiration, one of which is travel. I love seeing new places, studying unique architecture, and knowing there are many old stories and legends in each piece of history within a city. It makes me imagine the kinds of lives people have in these cities and towns so far away from my own. Seeing all that possibility inspires me to write stories and create new characters. Also, mental health and psychology have become recent sources of inspiration for me. I love placing new connections between my mental health and ways that other people could benefit. Often these ideas actually come to me when I’m practicing yoga. Then, I write about it. The third thing is my relationship. My fiancée is like the yin to my yang–we’re literally different in every single way. Getting to know him and understand how he thinks, seeing the way he wears his heart on his sleeve, and what he stands for inspires me pretty consistently!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My freelance writing consists of ghost-writing for long-form articles and occasionally shorter-form blogs. What sets me apart in this area of my work is that I provide compelling, high-quality and well-researched content. I do so because I thoroughly enjoy it. As a screenwriter, I get excited about pretty much every project I do. I’ve had a strong interest in film for about six years now, and I’ve never strayed far from the industry since. I think visually, so when I’m writing screenplays I tend to think almost like a director would. I think this gives me an edge to really convey what the audience would enjoy seeing on screen. I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve written a whole novel and a whole feature film. I’m not the most patient person, so I honestly surprised myself by actually finishing such large projects before hitting my thirties! Although the novel hasn’t been published, the feature film won a “Best Screenplay” award. It was from a small film festival called Beyond Earth, but it was my first feature so I’m proud nonetheless 🙂 I’m also proud of my ability to take risks and purposefully leave my comfort zone. I’ve only ever wanted to live a life full of meaning. I’ve forced myself to undergo big life changes to do so, and those “jumps” have brought me to the place I’m at today. The journey getting here has had a lot of ups and downs as any journey does, but I can safely say I’m closer to my dreams today than I’ve ever been. I hope my brand can be one symbolizing self discovery. I want it to emphasize the importance of finding inspiration by looking inward, especially at such a tough time to be able to go outward exploring. I’d like the world to know that the journey of self discovery is the only way we truly can reach inner peace with our lives. That journey is unique to each of us, so whatever yours entails, don’t compare it to anyone else’s.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend was visiting me in Atlanta for a week, I’d take them to my favourite food spots because let’s be honest–it’s all about the food. First, we’d go to Little Five Points Pizza and a have walk around that area one day. I’d take them around the beltline on the nicest, most sunny day that week. We’d snack on various food vendors there. I’d also take them out to the most grunge EDM show I could find at least one night, and Waffle House would have to follow. The next day, we’d go mellow out on a hammock somewhere in nature, or even just at Piedmont Park (and yes, we’d have to do some yoga). That night we’d hit up Atlas’ Garden Room to see one of my friends, the plentiful photo opps, and a glass of wine or two. We have to go sit at a cute café at some point to work and chill, like Full Commission ATL which is to my tastes (I’m a little bit of a coffee snob, btw). Ambiance and cappuccino quality are equally important. We’d go venture around Marietta Square to taste ice cream from Sweettreats and people-watch. We’d definitely finish the night with pizza from Marietta Pizza Company. Lastly, we’d pack the day in with a hike at Mount Yonah, a coffee at JumpinGoat Coffee Roasters (complete with view) plus a to-go dinner from La Parrilla and a drive-in movie at Starlight.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d have to thank my partner Max for supporting and believing in me in the last year. He’s helped me build up my freelance writing career to what it is today, thanks to that encouragement and support. Estebon Watson and Sabine Gousse are two more people who have helped keep me involved in the screenwriting world, which I very much appreciate. Before any of them, though, I’d have to thank my parents for withholding judgment for every crazy risk I took to avoid working meaningless jobs. Becoming a writer hasn’t been easy, and I needed time and support to get here. My move to Spain to teach English, my voyage to India, and then my travels teaching yoga throughout Southeast Asia–it was all in an effort to support myself in unconventional ways while getting inspired and seeing the world at the same time. It was all possible because I had them to come back to. They understood that the life most people aim for was never for me.
