We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiera Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kiera, why did you pursue a creative career?
Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved to draw and create things. Art was a way for me to express my innermost thoughts when I couldn’t speak up. Once I got older, I realized that nothing has brought me more happiness than creating for others and I knew it was something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been drawing or painting since I was a kid. I didn’t get into digital art until I was in middle school when I pirated a clunky version of Photoshop and started making graphics for my Tumblr page and editing Myspace pages for my friends.
From there, creating was always a constant. It wasn’t until college that I really realized that people would actually like and buy my art. So I started doing flyers and painting small pieces for people on campus. It wasn’t all easy – I struggled with following the degree I was already in or taking a chance to develop my art more. I eventually realized that I wouldn’t have been given this ability if I wasn’t meant to do something with it. So I did both. Photography came after graduation when I was going through the motions of life and with it, I realized there was a whole avenue to explore here as far as expressing myself.
If I wanted something to be taken from my story, I would say that there is never a perfect time for when you should start pursuing something you love but as long as you take the leap, everything else will follow.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m usually a homebody but when I do go out, I like to walk around and see what the city has to offer. I enjoy heading over to Piedmont Park to glance at the street art and take photos. The Atlanta Botanical Garden is always a good time, especially around the holidays when you get to see the garden lights at night. If I wanted to do some good old fashion bar-hopping, Edgewood is my go-to.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank a few people for being there as that extra push: Red – For always believing in me and rooting me on when I couldn’t do it myself. Coby Cole – Who took a chance on me to do more with my Graphic Design and practically pushed me out of my comfort zone to make me grow as an artist. Miche McIver – A talented artist in her own right, who introduced me to the art collective Creative Young Minds and showed me that once you follow your passion, you will start living as your truest self.
