We had the good fortune of connecting with KHALIKO and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi KHALIKO, why did you pursue a creative career?
In this big ol wide world, everything can be a little overwhelming. The systems set up for everyone don’t seem fair. Living and working through a creative and artistic lens feels like an escape from the monotony of everyday life. Creating art is a protest to the modern work flow, none of us in the band could function at a desk or working under heavy bureaucracy. It’s a privilege to make art and have the freedom to express how we feel. Our goal with our expression is to provide a voice for people to connect with and take them out of their everyday rhythms. We like to shake it up.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Four guys in a band.- we’ve all seen it before, bass, drums, guitar, piano. We aren’t inventing the wheel, but we sure are rolling. We all come from different musical backgrounds and share a love for pushing traditional sounds in new directions. At a KHALIKO show, you get a little jazz fusion blended with r&b, some thrash metal and pop, some rock and roll mixed with funk. We bend and break standards to create a modern sound while attempting to pay homage to all the greats that came before. Nothing is ever easy in the music industry, but when surrounded by people you love it makes the grind of it all easier.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is happening if you know where to look. Sunday night jazz jams, hole in the wall tacos, late night raves, or strolls through the park. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone. Start at the bar, talk to someone you don’t know, be cool, and the party will follow. Whether you’re on Edgewood, in Decatur, East Atlanta, Cabbagetown, or off Boulevard you can find a spot that suits your fancy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is dedicated to everyone across the globe on the front line fighting for justice and equality. We live in a broken money driven world where backwards politicians, police, and religions rule. Shout out to everyone fighting to create a peaceful, inclusive, and just world for everyone.
