Meet Khali Brewer | Performer, Director, Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Khali Brewer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khali, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The main thing that will make or break your career in the film industry is, self awareness. On set or in the production office, you’re around the same people for 12-20 hours a day. Most people are under a lot of pressure, sleep deprived, or just straight up stressed out. When working in a high pressure environment, being conscious of who you are, how you feel and staying true to your motives and desires keep you sane when no one else appears to be.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career started in college when I decided to switch my major from engineering to theatre technology. I knew I couldn’t live a fulfilling life without doing what I truly love. Relationships were tainted, the world was locked down from the pandemic and I had no idea if I’d ever get on a movie set after I graduated in 2020. Despite feeling like the world was against me, in 2021 I got a call to work in the wardrobe department for Creed 3 on my birthday. 5 days later I packed up and left North Carolina and have been in Atlanta ever since. After Creed, I worked in costumes on another film but something was missing… I needed to be in front of the camera. Over the past 2 years I had the honor of being in The Color Purple Movie Musical, and BMF season 3. I never could have imagined living in what I’m doing now, but God and manifestation is real!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh we’re going to Treanga City! Great food, drinks, hookah, and prices! For a chill vibe, definitely the Roswell Mills waterfall and lunch at Kura Revolving Sushi Bar. I love puzzles and games, so doing an escape room at the battery then going out is always a vibe too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to my man! Director Josh Dean! The first day we met, we knew we wanted to take over the film industry. Josh has taught me so much about directing and showed me how to be an independent filmmaker. We just got engaged and make it a point to show and advocate for black love in the black community and in the film industry. Stream his movie 7 Churches on TUBI!
