We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Dwayne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Interestingly, the word risk tends to have a very negative presence. The definition of the word alone doesn’t sound inviting. Risk is described as a threat; a situation involving exposure to danger. Other words used to define risk include uncertainty, chance, peril, and even loss.

The understanding of the word is enough to deter one from taking a risk. Yet, I have not allowed the meaning of this word to stop me from taking calculated risks in my life. I tend to look at the “risk” through a different lens. That lens is of faith, belief, hope, opportunity, and possibility.

This helps me to re-think risk as an opportunity rather than something that will be of loss or danger. I approach taking a risk with a more positive outlook and change the narrative of my expectation. This does not mean that I am not aware of potential outcomes that could be the opposite of my expectations. I don’t just jump out into the ocean without first being aware and prepared for the possible outcomes. This allows me to make chooses from a proactive approach when taking a risk.

This directly applies to my life and current career in the Health and Fitness Field. I took a chance and risk when I decided to leave my previous career of sixteen years in Public Education and pursue building a health and wellness business/career.

Before leaving my work in education, I would work my full-time job and meet with clients in the evening. This was something I learned from listening to the likes of Les Brown and Jim Rohn; both motivational speakers. I went to work from 7-4 and would see clients from 5-9, This went on for two and half years before I made a decision to take a risk or rather step out on faith and go full time in my new chosen career and life path.

Fast forward six years later and I can say this has truly been one of the best risks and decisions I have ever taken in my life. I put caution to the wind and went with the flow. I will admit it wasn’t easy initially, but I can say that it was worth it!

This is just one example of how taking risks has played an important and beneficial role in my life and career. Now that I think about it, there have been many other risks I have taken throughout my life that have led me to this present moment.

If I can offer any advice to anyone on the fence about stepping out and doing something, I would say, do your due diligence, have faith and trust in the path you are on and allow the God energy in you to guide you along the way,

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner and creator of Mind & Fitness Inc., a health and wellness service provider. My purpose is to help others become a better version of themselves through the practice of living healthy in mind, body, and spirit. This is done through the means of Physical Fitness Training, Nutrition Coaching, and Healthy Living Lifestyle Coaching.

The thing that sets me apart from others is my approach to how I serve my clients. I stated earlier that I spent many years in Public Education. My first role in the field was as a classroom teacher. The essence of that is still a part of me. Although I am in the Fitness industry now, I am still a teacher at heart. This means that I give the same energy, commitment, passion, and purpose to my adult clients that I did for my students many years ago. I operate from a space of expecting to see my clients become successful in their health and wellness journey.

The thing that excites me the most in what I do, is seeing my clients achieve success in their goals. This success ranges from not having to take medications due to improved physical fitness, changes in their appearance that helps their self-esteem, to the conversations I have with them as if I am a part of their family. Those are some of the things that I am proud of and which excites me in this line of work.

I am where I am businesswise because I had an idea, a vision on how I desired to live my life. I took that knowledge and created my company Mind & Fitness. This was not an easy process. It has taken time, consistency, sacrifice, and faith. There was a period of time after leaving my previous full-time career when I was building my clientele that I spent about 6 months driving for Uber & Lyft part-time to make up the difference in lost income. There were even challenges related to people in my circle at the time who frowned upon my decision to pursue a new career, and one in Fitness. However, I did;t let that deter me from what I initially envisioned and hoped for.

There have been many lessons that I learned and I am still learning as there is more to come from my business and brand. One of those lessons was to keep believing, speaking, acting, and praying in what you feel connected to! This places me back at how I didn’t view things as a risk, but more as my faith is put to work. Still, to this day, I continue to do so, as my vision is expanding and growing and my level has to expand and grow to meet what I now see and desire.

The thing I want the world to know about me and my brand is that we are intentional and purpose-driven to help others to ‘live life well in all parts of our being!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta has many new cool and trendy areas all over so there are quite a few options. However, due to Covid, I do not take in a much as the city as I used to.

Well, f it’s my friend’s first time in the city I think I would definitely include some of the tourist staples. We would have to visit the King Center, AUC, and all the attractions at Centennial Park. I would say my best friend is like me when traveling, we both like seeing and doing touristy things.

There are so many amazing restaurants in Atlanta, but one, in particular, I would take them to recently opened called. Low Country Steak. I believe it’s the only Black-owned Steakhouse in the city, and to top it off the food and ambiance are great.

Now to have some fun we would definitely visit City Winery if one of our favorite artists were playing, a good game of bowling at Midtown Bowl, and take it back to our childhood years with some skating at Cascade.

I know there are so many fun, exciting things to do in Atlanta, and these are just a few that I know my best friend would enjoy as we share a lot in common. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The person I would like to shout out to is my mother. She played a very instrumental part in where I am now. This is beyond the obvious of birthing and raising me as her only male child, but more so as the image, I saw growing up of one who practiced physical fitness activity.

I recall seeing my mother do home aerobics exercises when I was younger. She would have me, my sister, and any of the other children she would care for doing the workouts along with her. This was the start of my journey into the life I now live professionally.

I shot out my mother for her being the image and example that planted the seed at a young age that has now sprouted within me, allowing me to help others to transform their lives.
