We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevaun ‘Folks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevaun, why did you pursue a creative career?
I feel as though we all have an artistic side. Some just are more elevated in it than others. Honestly, going to concerts in the 90s, and also being in a family that’s musically inclined kind of pushed me into the music artist career. Plus I wrote poetry and played instruments while singing in the choir growing up, it’s just in me. Music helps me express things that I can’t normally express because I have social anxiety for real for real. It’s a way to connect to others that may feel down or alone and it can really make a positive impact. Plus, why not make a profit doing what you love right? The regular 9 to 5 just doesn’t sit right with me. To each his or her own but I prefer this type of career because honestly, it feels more free!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My brand is called M.a.f.i.a but it has a meaning. Making a future in alliance is what it stands for. I believe that is the only way to really be successful in any profession or anything for that matter. One big lesson I’ve learned is to never give up, when one door closes God will always open another. Do not get discouraged when it seems like it’s going nowhere. Faith plays a big part, but you also have to match the faith with consistency and building relationships. I am proud mostly of my work because it is clean. I do not use profanity or derogatory words in any of my musical arts. That really sets me apart from most of the music industry these days. Never let anyone tell you what you cannot do just keep going and doing it the way you want to do it, that is the key to being successful in whatever you do in my opinion. Stick to the plan.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok, if I would take my best friend anywhere it would be Paris! Man I just love Italian food lol. It seems like the people are welcoming there and the scenery is beautiful man! They definitely love music over there so it would be a dope networking experience as well to expand business endeavors for sure. A lot of wine tastings on a gondolier for a week would be nice lol. Plus, it’s a lot of art to check out! Too dope!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank an independent label called 3mg ent. They were the first to ever believe in me. I had the opportunity to have my first big performance on Bet’s 106&park twice because of them! They’ve showed me ways to move strategically and I still use those formulas today. Shout out to my mother Laquana Bray Marshall for being heavy in our community with performing arts. She’s a heavy influence on my career as well. We’re also going to shout out to God for giving me the talents, why not right?
