We had the good fortune of connecting with Keshia Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keshia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
If you want to be successful in business, you must be willing to take risks. You can cut down on the level of risk you are taking by being prepared. I have taken risks with new activations and on new clients or celebrities that I haven’t worked with but because I do my due diligence in other areas, I am prepared for the risk and on average have endured much more profit than loss.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I simultaneously run Insights Marketing, a top tier marketing and firm that specializes in connecting corporate partners with community initiatives on a global scale. I also founded, BCGA, the Black Collegiate Gaming Association. Although there are points of synergy between the two, I love the fact that they serve independent audiences. With BCGA I enjoy working with young people and providing young Black women with an opportunity to find success in the tech space. As an avid gamer since the time I was young, it’s a wonderful opportunity for me to connect with a personal passion and to break ground in an industry that hasn’t welcomed people of color and or women. It has allowed me to connect numerous young women with an opportunity to provide for themselves in an industry forecasted to offer tremendous growth over the next several decades.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My last vacation was in Ghana and although I’ve been there several times before I enjoy it more with each visit. I’ve been blessed to travel with my work and be exposed to various countries and cultures, but as an African American there is something very special about re-connecting with oneself on the continent of your ancestors. From the food, to the nightlife there is so much to discover that inevitably for me feels familiar. I would suggest anyone who has the opportunity to visit Africa to take the opportunity to learn more about their ancestry.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout would be much like so many of my colleagues who owe much of their success to an HBCU that prepared them for success and provided a rich network of like-minded peers to grow and support in their entrepreneurial efforts. I am forever grateful to my experience at FAMU for the internal network that came from my attendance and for laying the foundation for me as a business woman. I would be remiss not to mention my mother who instilled in me the importance of education and worked tirelessly to ensure I had the opportunity to excel.
