We had the good fortune of connecting with Kerry Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kerry, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Fear is our great enemy to success, it’ll keep you from stepping out of the boat into uncharted territory. When it comes to taking risks we have to embrace failure and have the courage to pursue our dreams.

As a photographer, every new shoot is a risk. Every new creative idea is a risk because we’re presenting our art to the world/ our target audience. There were many times were i hung up the camera because i was worried too much about what other people may think. Learning to take risks has helped with my confidence overall and failures have been what has positioned me for grater.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The New Horizon Photography was birthed in 2011 when i was a senior in High School. I was able to have one elective and i chose Photography. I developed the basic skills about rule of thirds, lighting and photoshop. At the time it was facing homelessness and it became an outlet for me and an escape. If you pay attention, the sky looks different each day at sunrise and sunset meaning everyday is a new chance to go after your dreams.

I didn’t officially launch my business until December 2nd, 2022 on my birthday. Throughout that time i got plugged into a local church and began to use my gifts and talents in that way. As i grew, my vision grew and began to enlarge. I aim to create, connect and inspire the next generation through the arts. Not many are book smart, or even athletic but with Photography there is always a place to excel.

What sets me apart is my love for people and the way i connect with everyone regardless of race, gender or how you were raised. I am able to capture priceless moments that tell a story. Everyone can own a camera and call themselves a photographer; but not many have the eye for it.

Regardless of where you come from you too can rise above, and it all starts with believing in yourself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m born and raised in the beautiful Long Beach, CA so i would start by showing off DTLB. I use to take the train there and shoot. There’s lots to do at The Pike, but my favorite spot is the lighthouse and how the lights reflect in the water.

And of course you can’t forget about the City Of Angels! The arts district is my second favorite spot to shoot at. It has a vintage vibe as you walk around. The graffiti art is all around and you can capture some great art there. One thing about LA is that there’s lots to eat.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
