Meet Kerri Phox | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kerri Phox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kerri, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I established Phoxtography LLC, my mission was to pursue photography as a passion that deeply resonates with my heart and soul. I find fulfillment in engaging with people, channeling creativity, and delivering results that not only meet but exceed my clients’ expectations.
Photography has always been an interest of mine. Growing up, I had access to cameras thanks to my father and uncles, who worked in New York’s film industry. My initial plan after college was to build a career in corporate America until I retired. During that time, I continued to nurture my passion for photography on weekends. My first independent photography assignment came from a successful local race director, who liked my work and hired me to cover her races. The opportunities she and others provided allowed me to develop my skills, expand my network, and build my confidence over time.
I leaned on the advice and encouragement of entrepreneurial friends who believed in my vision. While some doubted my decision, causing me to briefly second-guess myself, I have always found strength in the words of people that could relate to my plan.
My thought process behind starting my own business was to pursue my passion and focus on what I love to do.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am an event & travel photographer based in Atlanta and the founder of Phoxtography LLC. My goal is to create a comfortable environment where clients can truly enjoy the experience of being photographed. Capturing the authentic essence of each client is the foundation of my business. Whether you prefer an engaging conversation or a calm, serene atmosphere, I adapt to your preferences to ensure you feel at ease. We want to make the experience enjoyable and fulfilling for every client in front of my lens.
It is not easy; being an independent photographer comes with its challenges—it requires constant effort and determination. I can’t sit back and expect opportunities to come to me; I have to actively pursue and cultivate them. I’ve been fortunate so far, but I understand the importance of continually networking, building relationships, and staying persistent. Rejection is inevitable, but I remind myself not to take it personally and to move on to the next opportunity. An important aspect is to take the time to celebrate my successes, as they far outweigh the disappointments.
While creativity is the fun part, managing the business side of things is equally important. As a startup, I currently manage every aspect of the business on my own, from taxes and licenses to reconciling and billing. These tasks require research and time but they have provided me with a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship—an invaluable lesson I’ve embraced. The silver lining is that by wearing multiple hats and I am getting hands-on experience.
One of the biggest lessons I learned last year was the importance of maintaining a work-life balance. As a marathoner and triathlete, I realized that I had lost part of myself by focusing solely on entrepreneurship. Neglecting my personal outlet wasn’t the best path, and it made me recognize the need for balance in my life. I’ve since made a promise to myself to return to running and rebuild that part of my life, so I can continue doing what I love outside of my business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite dining spots in Atlanta include Houston’s, Thumbs Up, Tom, Dick and Hank’s, and Mescalito’s. For a true taste of Southern cuisine, a stop at the legendary Mary Mac’s or Bomb Biscuit is a must. Visitors often enjoy exploring iconic destinations like the Beltline, Piedmont Park, Coca Cola, The High Museum, Centennial Park, and the Georgia Aquarium.
Since I work out regularly, I’d invite my out-of-town guests to join me for a strength training session with Jamar Robinson (jplayhrd). Another option is a short walk/run. Evenings might include a visit to Kat’s Café or a relaxing night playing games at home. To wrap up the weekend, we’d attend a service at Impact Church, and finish with a delicious brunch to close out a great visit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God, family, and friends are the pillars that lift me up and keep me focused on my journey. From the very beginning, my sister Kelli has been a constant source of encouragement and enthusiasm She celebrates every opportunity I’ve had—whether it’s capturing moments at a baby shower or photographing elected officials or entertainers. Having her ongoing, unwavering support means the world to me.
I am also deeply grateful for early supporters of my photography before I transitioned from corporate life. Individuals like Temilola Sobemehim Marshall (Founder & Director, Runningnerds, LLC), Lisa Laws (Travel Concierge, The Black Onyx Group), Sloan Ware (Founder, Horizon Race Solutions), and the Commitment to Excellence (DMM Chapter of Omega Psi Phi, Inc.) believed in my work and gave me several opportunities.
Numerous people supported the idea of Phoxtography LLC going full time. Janie Douglas (Retired Aon Executive) and Lesia Mescuedi Davis (Owner,USalon) have been incredible mentors, selflessly offering guidance and support throughout my entrepreneurial journey. There are a few people that prefer to remain anonymous that have lifted me up when it was tough and encouraged me to stay the course when it was challenging.
The late Yanet Tekie (real estate investor) who we lost in 2023, played a pivotal role in encouraging me to turn Phoxtography LLC into a full-time business. Our conversations about dreams and aspirations remain a source of inspiration. Her energy was truly unmatched, and I continue to draw strength from her drive as I push forward with my passion. Yanet was a wonderful best friend; she told me, “Kerri, go for it! Your work is amazing, and life is short.” Her encouragement, along with the support of others, solidified my faith, confidence, and determination to turn my passion into a serious and successful business.
