We had the good fortune of connecting with Keren Treviño and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keren, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking has been part of my whole journey as a photographer. I went from a full-time college student to fully jumping into photography as soon as I graduated college. I originally went to school for nursing and it was interesting as I was going through the process of it all. I still really enjoy the medical field and I will forever think it is so interesting, but throughout my 4 1/2 years in college, I realized it wasn’t my passion. I remember telling my family and friends about how much I really liked photography, but didn’t know how it would be possible to make a living off it. Slowly, but surely I kept developing my craft in between school, socializing, working, and anything else life brought. Soon I realized that jumping into photography full time was the only way I would be able to push myself enough to make it work. It’s been tough. I have learned so much and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think overall we are so uniquely and wonderfully made by a perfect Creator and that sets me and every other artist apart from the beginning. My ideas and the way I look at the world will forever be inspired by the people and the experiences that I encounter daily which transcends into my art. My art would not be my art without people.. without daily life.. without this world we call home. I get super excited about art overall because at the end of the day all I am doing is showing a different perspective on a concept, person, place, or a thing. Art inspires and challenges me to look at the world differently and for that I am grateful. My cousin once told me, “art is what teaches people to experience the world in all of its fullness”. Those simple words have helped my brand and my journey in photography a lot because it has inspired me to challenge my art every time I pick up my camera.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love to go to Ponce City Market. It is the perfect place to eat, drink, shop, and sightsee. You get everything you want all in one place. After walking around there for a little bit, I would take them to the High Museum of Art for a fun experience before we walk to Piedmont park to eat some ice cream along the way. We would keep walking and take a break at one of the local coffee shops before going to dinner. Dinner would be at Noni’s, an Italian restaurant that I love in Edgewood. We would finish off the night drinking some wine at my house and watching a movie if I wasn’t feeling the “going out vibe” haha

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My photography journey wouldn’t be what it is without the support of my friends and family… Specially my family. I was talking to a friend the other day about how thankful I am for my parents and my brother for always believing in me even when I didn’t know what I was doing. My parents have always been super realistic with me in a way that helps me really think through things before jumping into them and at the same time giving me wings to fly. If I’ve taken any advice from my parents throughout this whole process is, “If you are going to do something, do it and do it well”. I will never forget those words. They have given me all the motivation I need to keep striving for more. So if you are reading this, Mami y Papi los amó mucho mucho mucho! Ustedes no saben cuanto su apoyo me ah ayudado durante todo este tiempo. Son los mejores!
