Meet Kenya Vaughn | Wig Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenya Vaughn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenya, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because it allows me to be me, when I’m working on the wigs I create it’s like an open canvas. Wig styling let’s me color and style based on how I’m feeling or what I feel will catch the eye of others. There are endless ways to bring a wig to life; multiple colors, different types of curls, and so much more.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When it comes to my brand of wigs I really focus on color and versatility! Wigs aren’t meant to be boring, in my opinion, they are fun, classy, bright or neutral colored, and overall they can be styled many ways! I offer ready to wear wigs, meaning that my customer’s receive the wig styled and colored. I make it easy for self installing or they can take it to a professional and have it installed by them as well. In my years of business, I learned that wigs can be really expensive and some ladies still want that luxury look but without the cost. So about a year in my business I created an affordable wig line called “Beauty On a Budget” which consists of human hair blend wigs but there are not your ordinary blended wigs! The lace is good quality, there’s a variety or colors, styles, and lengths. This is a major key in my business that’s makes my brand stand out. I feel as if I’m most proud of how far I’ve came within my craft, it’s very shocking how being consistent can really improve your work. I’m proud of taking a risk and opening my own shop as well. Some lessons I learned is that customer service is very important in business but that I won’t satisfy everyone when it comes to my brand but my goal is to try to satisfy as many people I can. I want the world to know that I’M HERE! I’m here to help women feel beautiful with or without wigs but for them to know I care and want to provide the best wig experience ever!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well considering my birthday just past, I would definitely take my friend to Detroit, MI because they have some real good food and places to hang out and relax. So, as far as food we would go to this place called Pizza Cat, which has various pizza options and wings! Also, seafood is such a good choice, and there’s a place called 168 crab and karaoke! So you can sing and eat good, that’s a win win. Now as far as hanging out, the Riverwalk is a nice spot to go downtown and enjoy the scenery! If we feel like getting cute and dancing, there’s a few clubs in the area as well.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is a few people in my support group that pushed me to be where I am now and that would have to be my parents, my cousin, and one of my college mentors. My parents play a huge part in keeping me going because being in a beauty industry can be hard, discouraging and sometimes stressful. My father was a business owner as well, he use to paint cars and do body work. He was great at what he did! I remember he had a slogan saying” I make old cars, look new” and that’s how I feel about wigs, especially those wigs that need some TLC. My dad always showed me that business mindset thoughout life and I’m grateful he did. Now my mother who is still with me, she pushes me to keep going because business isn’t always smooth sailing . She always tells me that I have gift for what I’m doing now! My cousin the one who was there throughout the whole process of getting my business up and running. She supports me by helping with different styles I’d like to try and overall making sure I stay on my feet and don’t give up. Lastly, my college mentor assisted me with the legal part of business which was obtaining my LLC, EIN #, and any other business documents. I had no clue about any of those things when starting my business but she helped me tremendously!
