We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenya Usher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My motivation for starting KU VISUALS stemmed from a desire to pursue a fulfilling career that I am passionate about on a daily basis. Additionally, I wanted to establish my own company to create a lasting legacy. Having several family members who successfully run their own small businesses showed me that it is achievable with dedication and effort. My experiences working a 9 to 5 job further fueled my drive to follow this path, as I often found myself thinking about photography and videography during work hours. As I have delved deeper into these fields, I have come to realize that this is the career I truly want to pursue.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
With a passion for photography and videography, I launched KU Visuals. Photography has been a recurring passion throughout my life, but it wasn’t until December 2021 that I reignited my love for it. Exploring the full potential of my camera has been an eye-opening journey. As a photographer/videographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing a diverse array of moments, from lifestyle scenes to corporate video and weddings.

I am immensely proud of my progress in the photography and videography industry. Like many in this field, my work reflects my growth and the significant investment I have made in my business. The skills I have acquired, the places I have visited, and the people I have met inspire me to continually strive for excellence in my business.

Starting KU VISUALS was a challenging endeavor. Camera equipment is expensive, which can be a significant hurdle at the outset. Additionally, mastering manual camera settings and controlling lighting in various situations were initially my greatest challenges, and they remain areas for continual improvement. However, through persistent practice and learning from online tutorials, I have been able to overcome these difficulties. Along the way, I have met passionate individuals who share my love for photography and videography, many of whom have become friends. These connections are invaluable, as they provide additional resources and learning opportunities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Great question! As a native of Atlanta, I can recommend numerous fantastic places to visit, all perfect for photography. I would begin our itinerary at Krog Street Market and then head to Ponce City Market, allowing us to explore the city and enjoy an impromptu photoshoot. Next, we should stop by a spot known for its excellent wings and drinks. For a fun activity, I would plan a visit to Beat the Bomb or Your Third Spot. To wind down, we could head to a nearby rooftop bar to watch the sunset and catch up on each other’s lives.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My most significant mentors are the talented individuals who share their expertise through tutorials on YouTube. Thanks to these creators in the photography industry, I have learned how to operate my camera and manage my business effectively. My greatest supporters are my family, who consistently choose KU VISUALS for events, family gatherings, graduations, and more. I am deeply grateful to my family for their unwavering support and to the YouTube creators who dedicate their time to producing outstanding educational content.
