We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenya Finch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my own business during the pandemic when the job market wasn’t the best. I had just completed my undergraduate degree and was ready for my first “big girl” job but couldn’t find a job that truly emphasized the importance of health and helping the community. With my health education background I wanted to leverage health education in a fun and different way and did so through juicing which prompted me to go into business for myself.

What should our readers know about your business?
Blacker The Berry is different than most businesses in that we are making positive changes one juice at a time. Not only does our business promote a healthy environment but also healthy lives. We support local farms and other black owned businesses to obtain our produce whenever we can. We believe in the importance of keeping the dollar within the black community and supporting other black-owned businesses. One of the biggest challenges is staying consistent. Just like the seasons change so does business, staying consistent even during slow seasons has been a challenge because you don’t know when the next sale will come. One important thing about navigating changes and staying consistent is having faith. I remember reading one quote that states “if god gave you the vision for a business, he’ll also give you the customers.” There’s so many lessons business has taught me and one of them is strangers support you more than people in your circle. Don’t be afraid to try again after breaks or failures. It doesn’t matter how many times you been down as long as you get back up.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in the city consist of Caribbean and soul food restaurants. One of my favorites is SoCo located in Brooklyn. Knowing me after having a great meal I have to have something sweet to follow so we definitely be at ice pops or Sydney sweets which are both black-owned and delicious.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Though there are many I would love to shoutout who have helped me along my journey I would like to shoutout God who has planted the seed in my mind and has brought the right people in my life to help me nourish the seed to life.
