We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenisha Syphertt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenisha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My son, Ase’, was born during the Covid pandemic, July 2020. Being a newly single mother my son inspired me to follow my dreams of becoming a Master Loctician! I knew I not only needed to pay the bills but I wanted to create a legacy for my grandchildren’s children.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well as you know, I’m Lavender, the CEO&Owner of Lavender Locs, The Luxury Loc Bar of Augusta. We provide our clients with the highest quality services designed to meet each of their individual needs. With #Lavender, you will experience luxurious care and detail-oriented services in an ultra-glamorous environment. Simply a vibe you can’t resist. Just like my name (Lavender) my vibe and salon is a true representation of lavender- calmness, relaxing, loving, beautiful, and the ability to heal. Lavender is known to encourage tranquility. The ability to calm the psyche bodes well for purity and healing.
What sets me apart from others is my mindset and my drive. I pray and envision that I will be the best loctician in the world. I truly believe it! Within a year I was able to open my first salon. Last year I remember doing hair in my one bedroom apartment (for FREE!!!) while baby wearing my new born son. So going from booth renter to owner in a year was huge for me! However, it was not easy. There were plenty of long long long nights and early mornings. Thank God for my parents, holding me and my son down until Lavender was able to blossom. Sometimes I use to forget to even take care of myself because I was so driven to have a better life obtaining my goals for my son and I.
The biggest obstacle I had to overcome was having little to no clients when I first started this journey and no one in the CSRA wanted to give me a chance because I was the “new girl.” Another obstacle would be knowing when I have outgrown a space or person/people in my life and in business. The lessons I have learned along the way is believing in myself more than I want others to! To understand that I am the rookie and the vet and I have so much more to learn, to create, to touch, and to heal. I know that the best is on the way to me and I receive it with open arms and genuine joy.
I want the world to know that Lavender Locs is here and you will be able to hear about me and my products for centuries to come. My goal is to be just as successful as Madam C.J. Walker, Tailah Waajid, BB Judy, and every sister that paved the way for Lavender.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Yay! First off I love week long trips and itineraries to keep the vibes going. We would first check in to a 5 star airbnb with an amazing view. Next, we would pop the champagne to toast to our many accomplishments. After a lil nappy nap lol we would hit the mall for some retail therapy. Shopping always sparks up an appetite for me. We would hire a local black chef to cook at the crib for us as we lay out on the back patio getting some much needed sunlight.
The next few days would be more of a staycation. Waking up with some grounding, meditation, and yoga. Followed by some tea and affirmations for the soul. Later in the afternoon we would visit a lake and take a long nature walk. Water is cleansing to the soul and nature wraps around you like a warm hug if you let it.
Around day 3 and 4 we would go to a museum, probably the Trap Museum (T.I. and Tiny are super dope creatives), followed by riding the bird in downtown ATL. We would stop by Local Green ATL, they have the best vegan street corn period! Ending the night skating and making memories at Cascade.
As the trip is slowly coming to an end, I would book us facials and deep tissue massages with CBD oil at Jeju. After spending hours at the spa, we would jet over to Bye Bye Baby, for the BEST vegan black bean burgers I’ve ever had.
Our last and final outing would be us going Skydiving. With all that we have accomplished, I would want to do something I never thought I could fully go through with. Skydiving would unlock a level of potential I didn’t know I had. That strength would prepare us for what’s next to come!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My son Ase’, my baby Cassius Hillary, and my spiritual advisor. My spiritual coach told me she saw greatness for me in the beauty industry. She told me to start planning now because my life was about to change…and then Lavender was born! I started doing hair out my apartment for FREE!! It was my way of giving thanks for my God gifted hands. I used to wear Ase’ on my back in his baby wearer and would be doing hair for 12 hours straight {with him crying and breastfeeding in between]. lol But my business really began to take off around the time Cassius came into our lives. Cassius and I are like twins lol both Scorpios and dope a$$ entrepreneurs who are super creative and competitive. So we challenge each other to do better, be better, go harder for Ase’. He gave me that push I needed to finally just jump into hair completely and when my mindset changed, my clientele tripled.
So they all play a huge part in the success of Lavender Locs, The Luxury Loc Bar of Augusta. When yall read this I want you to know I love you deep and I appreciate you being on this journey with me.
