We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenia Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenia, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
There’s so many different ways to answer this question, whether it be my impact through doing hair or me being a creator.. My business and me being a creator is geared towards showing dark skinned women that they are deserving of anything they want or that they can do it too. I love uplifting women. The goal is to help people understand that you can’t put a restriction on beauty regardless of the color of your skin, what you have and what you don’t have. Often times, when people are in the limelight, melanated women are the ones who are overlooked unless it’s provocative. I feel like so many women don’t go after the opportunities presented to them because in our generation it can be intimidating. I too am intimidated sometimes but you can’t let it stop you.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’ve been in the hair industry for a decade plus! Initially working alongside my mother, who inspired me by the way she catered to our clients, it just made me want to take it more seriously..
I also have to thank her for the amazing work ethic that I have today.. She pushed me to do whatever I set my mind to so I finally decided to branch off and pursue my own dreams “Melanin Luxe Collection”, Where black meets luxurious! I specialize in hair whilst also maintaining a small micro influencing platform.
The the thing that sets me apart is the message behind it.. the goal was to give women who look like me the opportunity to have access to luxury items and great service for a fair price, Whilst also creating something for melanated women to enjoy..
I am where I am today because of my mother instilling the hustle in me & just investing in myself, it wasn’t easy but what Is? I wanted to give up many times but, I’m glad I didn’t & it’s still improving. A lesson that I’ve learned for me would be to never feel too bad about what people have to say about you negatively because it can really affect your performance and what you do.
I want the world to know that I love uplifting women. The goal is to help people understand that you can’t put a restriction on beauty regardless of the color of your skin, what you have and what you don’t have.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly I’m still new here but Roc south cuisine has become my favorite thus far!! Macaroni and chicken is the best that I’ve had. Definitely would have to go there a few times but Atlanta has so many different spots to choose from we could do something different everyday lol.. 3rd spot for all the fun vibes and cirque for drinks.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First things first all glory to God! Nothing would be possible without him! My courage and confidence derived from him. Secondly my mom. Everything I’m proud to see within myself, I learned from her. My biggest motivation. Lastly my granny, my closest confidant, the strongest pillar of my support.. I’m Forever thankful for them all.
