We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Swanson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelsey, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work life balance has become work-work-work life balance between a 9-5 job, my photography work, and a seasonal part-time photography job. I keep my life active and full between jobs and hobbies as I enjoy the busyness and making time for what I love to do. I do my best to create weekly schedules that allow for my dance and reading hobbies after work, and my photography work and travel on the weekends. I think the balance and mix of it all is chaotic but I’m doing what I love so I enjoy it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My photography features the unique landscape, architecture, culture, and life of locations I travel to. When you buy or see my photography, I’m bringing travel to you. This is an over-saturated area of course, so my biggest challenge is to do it differently. To not only capture the overall scene that people may see but also the details and life in a more artistic way.
I’m consistently excited by the travel I do and what I may see and photograph. My work is a 50/50 mix of chance and planning. I learn from every photograph I take and I apply what i’ve learned since I first started photography when I was 14.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To visit Providence my first suggestions would be viewpoints: Prospect Terrace and the pedestrian bridge. To visit: RISD Art Museum and Waterfire night. To eat: Malted Barley, Massimo’s, and Insomnia Cookies.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My photography program at Rhode Island College and the photography community on Twitter have greatly contributed to my growth as an artist. Both have allowed me to make connections, see all the possibilities in photography, expand my own work, and grow my career.
