We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Karim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, how does your business help the community?
As an artist my hope is to touch people in unexpected ways. To stop for a moment, to think, to feel , to relate on their own terms. Many of my pieces are painted in the tranquil place Chixculub Puerto so there is a cross cultural element to many of my pieces. I feel a love and inspiration that I can only explained through my paintings.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve had plenty of challenges in evolving as an artist. Some of my greatest technical weaknesses create other aspects of my artwork that are very powerful. Perspective was very difficult at first, but I’ve evolved into my unique perspective. My most difficult challenge was starting to paint again after 20 year and after a trauma that left me almost unable to paint. I learned that the simple act of small steps, not judging myself, and letting the paintings and life guide me would lead to greater and better things. Fearless in the pursuit of my dreams became my new way of living.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I like simple joys. I would hang out on my front porch in Lake Claire and have hot tea. We would see neighbors and friends and enjoy a great conversation. Biking on the inner-city bike paths and belt line is a great way to explore parks , see art, and shop in Atlanta. I’d take them the Botanical Gardens and Piedmont Park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My group and friends and family are vital to my support and encouragement as I pursue my passion of art. My friend Sylvia Cross, owner of Sycamore Place Gallery, encouraged me to re engage with art at my lowest time. My family, James, Josh, Jacob have been patient with paintings and paint all over the house. Michelle in Mexico has been a muse in some of my paintings. Finally, my friend Jorge is eagerly waiting to see my work progress on a daily basis and photographs my work in Mexico.
