We had the good fortune of connecting with Keithia Mayson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keithia, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Consistency, perseverance and PATIENCE. I’ve learned that I have to be consistent and persevere even though things haven’t come to fruition within my time frame, I still have a goal, a dream that I’m looking to achieve. Nothing happens overnight and not all things lie at your fingertips. But I refuse to quit! I’m learning that it’s only through patience that I can truly learn from the curveballs which get thrown in my path. In the words of Antonio Mochado, “Don’t rush things: for the cup to run over, it must first be filled.”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In March 2020, the beginning of one of the worst pandemics we’ve ever experienced, I lost my job. A job where I felt I was one of their top employees, I was one of the first that was let go. That experience gave me a totally different outlook on the workforce. I knew that I needed to do something different, but I wasn’t sure what. I didn’t want to keep getting paid to build someone else’s brand when I could build my own. For months, I prayed and prayed asking God what was for me, what can I make my own that I’d actually enjoy? I knew that I was good at crafting and I knew that I absolutely had a LOVE for beauty and accessories. It wasn’t until I was sitting, doing my daughter’s hair and started looking for different hair accessories, when I said “I’m sure I could make this.” And that’s exactly what I did. I looked up different YouTube videos on “How to make bows” not realizing that it was as popular as it was. I told my husband about my idea, and he helped me put it into action. On November 17, 2020, Keek’s Bowtique became a business, and I was officially a business owner.
I now make personalized, unique bows for unique little girls and I truly enjoy every moment of it
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We LOVE to eat! The first place we’ll go is to Ponce City Market. The food there is absolutely amazing and the rooftop views are to die for. Then we’d probably head to downtown Atlanta to visit the Coca Cola factory and again, to get the city views from our Ferris wheel, Sky View Atlanta. Then we’d spend a day doing a little bike riding down the Atlanta belt line, taking amazing pictures and enjoying the scenery. Make our way over to Two Urban Licks for some great steak and potatoes, literally the best in Atlanta. Then end the weekend off at the historic Starlight drive in movie theater
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Before anyone and anything else, all credit goes to God because none of this would be possible without Him. But I want to shoutout my pusher, my husband, Terrance Mayson. I came to him on a Tuesday, with this random idea of making bows. I told him that I think that this would be something that I’d be really good at. The next Thursday, I received a bulk order from my favorite craft store where he’d ordered everything I needed to jumpstart my business. He’s been my biggest supporter. Through the late nights of processing orders, to the days where business was slow and I had wanted to give up because there were no orders at all. Of course, I have my favorite YouTube channels and Instagram businesses that have inspired me to go further, but this one’s for my number one fan. To have someone see your vision with you is really a blessing that I’ll forever be grateful for.
