We had the good fortune of connecting with Keema Chang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keema, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been a creative person since I was a little girl I was always making something, if it was making clothes for my barbies, playing in my moms makeup and doing my hair and my friends hair. I enjoyed recreating looks I saw in music videos like EnVogue or Whitney Houston. Women that looked like me!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I play around with many art forms but I’m best known for my hair and makeup artistry. I have been doing hair and makeup for commercials and music videos for the past 20 years! Starting my career when I did in the Miami market I was known for being able to work with all skin tones and hair textures. Back when I started I had to go with the flow and just figure certain things out on my own their was no YouTube I could go to to see what I need in my kit it was just experience I had to learn from. This was also an industry that was not easy to get into so I had to make my work stand out and not just making sure the hair or makeup was on point but also how was my timing, was I able to get what they needed done in the time I had and was it good work! It was challenging but it was fun being able to bring such creative ideas to life then seeing your work on TV. At this point in my career and business what I enjoy most is being a gateway for new artist to get into this industry. I enjoy teaching the skills needed to be on set. It’s so much more than just being a makeup artist or hair stylist. To be able to build a brand doing what I love has been such a blessing. But when I look back at the countless women I have been able to give an opportunity to live out their dreams doing what they love through my brand is the ultimate blessing and I pray to be able to continue to do this for many more years.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I live in Miami where there are so many things to do especially if your a beach girl like me! Anything near the ocean with good food and drinks is a good time for me. Yacht day is a thing in Miami, a yacht w jet skis food, and drinks is an great day in Miami. Wynwood is another favorite spot of mine good food and lots of art!!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been impacted and influenced by many people on my journey but my foundation begins with my mother. My mother is the strongest woman in my life (she passed away 7 years from cancer). She has always believed in me and my talent and made me believe in myself. She also always reminds me that I have to put God first and to do all I do for his glory, and never give up, no matter what I’m feeling I cannot give up. She thought me how to stand in my own feet. The other person who is my source of encouragement and strength is my husband Young Chang. I don’t care what idea I come up with he is always behind me like what do we need and where do we start. He is truly my rock because as a creative and a Virgo I often get lost in my thoughts and over thinking, he helps keep me grounded, balanced, and encouraged!
