We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayah Stuart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayah, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned since creating my own business is to stay true to yourself. In order to support your own growth, you have to meet yourself where you’re at to be able see the biggest picture so you can then accomplish it. Success stems from authenticity and vulnerability. That is where growth lies.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I currently run my own private, self-taught all natural hair care business that’s about 6 years old now. The growth has been so amazing to endure and that excites me because I have bigger plans beyond hair such as set design and music production. Hair has always been my rock to fall back on, but more importantly a stepping stone for the kind of career I want. So far, it has not been easy, but nothing worth having is easy. I overcame so many obstacles by continuously challenging myself to see the bigger picture no matter the struggle. I also believe in proper preparation and maintaining Plan A so I’m never blindsided by the permanent struggles of life.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is staying true to myself. There is nothing like constantly having to adapt to your surroundings—it’s one of the most challenging aspects of life. So, staying true to what is best for me has helped me tremendously in staying the course no matter what.
I hope the world recognizes just how powerful each and every individual is by having a voice and a choice. Stay the course. Believe in yourself and no one could ever take that away from you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of the best locations to chill, eat, and hang out is Ponce City Market or Piedmont Park/Centennial Park area. There’s always buzz anywhere downtown and the food and people are always a pleasant thing to discover. Whenever you visit Atlanta, be sure to walk along the belt line where they also have restaurants, grocery stores, gift shops, and activities to engage upon. My favorite restaurant right now is between Mama’s Mexican Cuisine and Desta Ethiopian. Nonetheless, there are so many great restaurants to choose from, you just have to experience it for yourself. Also, our historical landmarks, for which Atl can be known for, are very educational and humbling, as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family is my true support system. Nearly all of my immediate family has worked for themselves in one way or another which is so inspiring to me. They truly embody self-preservation in order to fulfill your own purpose independently. And it’s not often that people respect the time and effort needed to pour into yourself, to then pour into others. You have a responsibility to take charge of your destiny no matter the cost, & only then will you accumulate great power. They are powerhouses in their own right.
