We had the good fortune of connecting with Kavonda Byrd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kavonda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
This is a great question! For years I worked in the food serve industry as a server than I moved into management, however I know that as a mother of three children working in the food serve industry did not allow me the freedom and flexibility that I needed in my life at that time. So I thought about my options and decided that I would drive for Lyft. I know being an independent contractor for them would allow me to set my own schedule and allow the flexibility I was looking for in a job. I must say I loved driving for Lyft, I had everything I needed and the money was good as well.

Then Covid-19 hit and the shut down really affected me as a Lyft driver, I was out of work. For the first time in my life, I just had time. Time to think, time to reevaluate, and time to explore the things I really enjoyed. One thing I knew I enjoyed was lighting candle sipping a good wine and just being in the moment of the scent. I was intrigued by the way a candle good candle could set a mood or just make in feel relaxed after a long stressful day. Then I said to myself, “Girl, this is something you can do, because you know a candle is more than just a candle.” So I started doing my research and begin buying the material I needed. Then I would send them my friends and get their feedback. I knew my friends would be honest and tell me the truth. After getting their feedback I made the proper adjustments and now I have 5 signature aromatherapy scents as well as several other scents you are sure to enjoy and I am currently working on seasonal scents.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create peace, comfort, and memories with the candles I make. I have an aromatherapy line that I created just because of the stress that came with Covid-19. I saw so many people stressed, moms teaching kids at home, people working from home for the first time ever, the world was upside down and I wanted to be able to offer a small bit of relief. I believe what makes me different is the love I have for making people smile. The core of me just wants to see people happy and it brings me joy to know I can do that with a candle. I am excited for the future. I want my business to thrive and every day I work hard to see that come true.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my community. Ashley Bass is the person that sent me down the road of candles. I do not know if there would be a Kavonda Candles if she wouldn’t have suggested it. My boyfriend Jay has been nothing but supportive. Marcus, Nechelle, Olivia, has been there every step of the way. I have amazing people in my circle and they have pushed me to be the best version of myself on this new adventure.
