We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Mayer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision we have had to make thus far was leaving our full time jobs to focus on our own business. Leaving the financial security that came with our stable jobs was a risk, but it was the final push we needed to turn our dream into reality.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In order to set Horticult apart from the long line of nursery professionals that is our family, our company specializes in the jungle succulent, Rhipsalis. Initially, it was our love for this unique plant that led us to acquire as many varieties as we could get our hands on. Today, we have one of the most diverse collections of Rhipsalis available to the public. We have even incorporated this plant into our most recent venture – Horticult’s sister company, Saul & Saul Designs, where we design & create jewelry made from natural materials. In order to acquaint Horticult’s large customer base to our more novel company, we designed a fringe earring collection where each pair resembles a different variety of Rhipsalis. We even went as far as to include a small plant of the particular variety the earring resembles with the purchase of the pair. If we have learned anything it is that specializing in a unique product, no matter what industry you are in, sets you apart in even the most saturated of markets.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week-long trip in Atlanta? The opportunities are endless! No matter what time of the year it is, Atlanta sports are always a must see! Braves season? Catch a game & then check out the shops around the Battery. Falcons or Atlanta United Fan? See the state of the art retractable roof on the new Mercedes Benz Stadium & then shoot over to the ferris wheel on Luckie Street. Basketball season? Watch the Hawks play & take a picture with the iconic “ATLANTA” on the side of State Farm Arena.
Start another day’s adventures at the Botanical Gardens. From holiday lights to Chihuly glass sculptures, there is always an exhibit that will impress! Work up an appetite walking through the garden? Head over the Ponce City Market for lunch. Get some shopping in & have fun in the adult playground on the roof! One of our favorite spots to take visitors is the Jackson Street Bridge around sunset for a stunning skyline photo opp. After everyones had their fill of the view, Inman Park is a great place to do some restaurant hopping. To get the full neighborhood experience, grab each course at a different spot – there are so many to choose from!
For the history, science, or literature buff, the Atlanta History Center, Fernbank Museum, Margaret Mitchell House, or Carter Center are a great time. We love to take friends to the Delta Flight Museum where you will experience a visual history of Delta & most excitingly – pilot a Boeing 737 flight simulator! This is the only simulator open to the public in the country!
All in all, Atlanta is a great time for everyone!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our shoutout goes to the Porchetta Restaurant Group. When we were first starting the container gardening division of our company they were one of the first restaurants to hire us. Later, when they were opening another restaurant they had enough confidence in us to give Horticult complete creative control. That confidence gave us the opportunity to grow our container gardening business into what it is today! We cannot thank them enough!
