We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Butry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I see taking risks as just part of the adventure of life, especially as an entrepreneur. Risk taking has helped me throughout my life and has led me to where I am today. I moved to Altanta in 2015, without knowing a soul and successfully grew my business from the ground up to where it is today. I force myself to do something uncomfortable every day, in order to grow as a person and a business owner.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have achieved my current position through a combination of dedication and hard work. After graduating college in Chicago, I started off in the commercial side of the industry working under a well known architect which I enjoyed very much; however, wanted a closer and more personal connection to the client which lead me to start my own business in residential design. I then found my way to Naples, FL where specializing in high end residential design landed me clients nationwide including Naples, Chicago and Scottsdale, Arizona.
At first, it was not easy, in fact, most days started off with a pit in my stomach. The residential design business can be a challenging one. Working in the homes of clients is obviously very personal and there is a lot of money & emotion involved. I often joke I am a part time marriage counselor (my clients agree)! One of the main lessons I’ve learned is that it all works out. Regardless of the issue at hand, there’s no need for undue stress as a solution will always manifest. I take great pride in my ability to demonstrate resilience in the face of life’s challenges.”

I came up with the name Energy Design for my business because I believe our energy, attitudes and environments have a strong impact on our overall wellbeing. The energy of our home should be a reflection of the type of person we want to be in the world. Do you want your home cluttered, unorganized with oversized furniture leaving you no room to flow freely in your space? Or do you want to wake up everyday refreshed, organized and ready to take on the day after you have coffee in your expansive oasis?

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would have us start everyday doing a meditation which I believe is crucial for life (especially in the city)!

Followed by breakfast at Strive, my favorite vegan spot located in Sandy Springs.

Our days would be filled kayaking the Chattahoochee, biking The beltline and Silver Comet Trail or hiking Indian Seats.

We would also stop by the High Museum of Art and Atlanta Apparel Center to scope out all of the amazing vendors.

Dinner at Rumi’s is imperative. Every location.

We would also hit up Lyla Lila before attending a concert at Fox Theater to wrap up the week!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends for their love and support every step of the way. My colleagues that I’ve met in Atlanta especially: Kristina Bell for helping me get my foot through the door, Kristin Lloyd for being an awesome mentor, My contractor Russell Moolman who continues to support me and my visions with a smile on his face, Stephen Shull for all of the wonderful referrals and laughs. My team and assistants, Stephanie, Carson, Arias and Lee who make it all possible. My amazing clients who have welcomed me like family, it has truly been an honor. To all of my real estate agents, referrals and new clients – Thank you!!
