We had the good fortune of connecting with Kasey Voss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kasey, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I went to a performing arts school when I was in high school in upstate New York. I got in the school for art and dance. I decided to make dance my major but I have always enjoyed being creative.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my business during the pandemic. I got bored sitting at home and saw some pictures on Instagram of balloon art. I thought it was beautiful and decided to try it on my own. Nature inspires me. There are so many beautiful colors in the world and I enjoy working with different colors palettes.
I started with playing around with some shapes and designs. I took pictures of my creations and posted them on Facebook Marketplace to see if there was any interest in my services. I got my first client and didn’t look back.
This is a difficult profession because there are so many talented people out there that do the same balloon art but I was reading a blog and was reminded that there is plenty of work to go around. I decided the only way to get some visibility was to contact some local businesses in my area and ask if I could decorate their store fronts at no cost if I could leave my business cards with them. By doing that I was able to practice more and gain clients along the way. It has not been easy due to the cost of trying to keep up with other balloon businesses in the area. I have had to figure out how to build some of my backdrops myself or the help of my son.
Lessons I’ve learned is that practicing your craft is important. Also There are many other people ready to have a lower price than you or clients that don’t want to pay the price you are asking. You have to know what you’re time is worth at the end of the day. I made the mistake at the beginning and took less money and ended up losing in the end.
I work hard to make people happy and give them what they ask for. There have been many times that I would add to a piece because I thought it would look better. I think looking at each piece individually and making sure you are satisfied with what you are putting out is key. But I’m always the hardest on myself and I always see something that I could have done differently.
I don’t think I’ll ever be completely satisfied with my work 100%. I try to strive to be better every piece.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take anyone of my friend to Little Five Points. I love that area. It has so much creativity. And I love to people watch. It reminds me home.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother definitely inspired me to be creative. She was always coming up with ways so that we could use our imaginations.
