We had the good fortune of connecting with Karo Duro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karo, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I don’t think that you can control the legacy you leave. I believe others, through their experience of you, craft that narrative for you. So for me, that takes the pressure off of being anything more than I need to be, myself. So hopefully I leave a trail of heart felt moments with those I encounter through my journey.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an Artist and UX Consultant working within the frontier of the bridge between art and technology. I was born in Nigeria but spent most of my childhood in Ireland. It was my father’s dream to move his family to America, and in 2009 he got the chance; I have been in Atlanta ever since.
I am deeply intrigued by the divine nature of dreams, and the seemingly infiniteness of our mind. Therefore I use my art to explore these mysteries in an attempt to express our existence. By fusing digital art and motion design, I craft “Visual Poetry”– a term I coined to describe the composition of my work. Some of my work was born out of dreams while some are uncalculated streams of consciousness. The computer is my medium, and it is a multidimensional well of possibilities.
Through my artistic expression I have been able to walk through doors I used to dream of when I was younger. Recently my work has been showcased in Carnegie Hall and across the world galleries in West Africa and Europe. I am grateful for my resilience, the perspectives, and people that have helped me navigate through the difficult moments in my life. There have been unforeseen challenges, but I adapted. I am optimistic about this journey I have embarked on.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love brunch so we’re starting our morning off at Cultivate Atlanta, a black-owned healthy brunch cafe based in the upper westside.
Then we’ll make out way to the Digital Art Gallery in Underground Atlanta. There we’ll view some cutting edge art work, grab drinks, and explore al the interactive installations.
We’ll then take a break and head to Old Fourth-ward Skate Park and lay out in the sun. Maybe do a bit of dancing if the portable DJ booth is live.
Then for dinner we will head to Politan Row. It’s a chic food lounge located in Midtown. It has everything from Asian cuisine, Jamaican food, to classic American and really good drinks. There’s also some beautiful artwork displayed around the space.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my partner Omari Ingram. He is a multifaceted mind that has has a huge part in my trajectory. artistry, and personal growth. He celebrates my brightest moments and has been a pillar of hope, love, and care during darker times. His intellect intrigues me everyday and pushes me to expand my perspective. We have achieved so much together.
