We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Tuten Creative Director & Mother and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karla Tuten, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
At the start of my career as a creative, I honestly didn’t have great balance. Which honestly was because I truly loved and had passion for my job, so I felt like I was always immersed in this creative mindset. It wasn’t until the birth of my son and I strived to have more boundaries with my work life balance. I set aside time in the mornings and evenings that are sacred to my family. While I still have passion for my work, I also had passion for motherhood and I wanted to succeed in both (which can be challenging at times). And in order to succeed in both, you have to know when to say “no” and to not bite off more than you can chew. I also realized that I needed to pick and choose my battles.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a graphic designer in the home building industry (very niche), and I absolutely love it. I get the most excited when I’m refreshing a current brand and working to elevate it. Most of the time, design gets neglected and over time the brand will appear outdated; so nothing makes me happier than partnering with a brand to push it and give it a little TLC. The most challenging part of being a creative, is the ever-present imposter syndrome. I sometimes need to take a step back and appreciate how far I’ve come as a designer. Malcolm Gladwell said that it takes 10,000 hours to become a master – and part of that is true. The grass is green where you water it, and to improve your skills you need to practice and work outside of your comfort zone. Taking on projects outside my comfort zone can be difficult – but growth is always an uncomfortable process.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would definitely visit the Belt Line, Ponce City Market, and East Atlanta Village. Touristy sites must-have: Coke World, Georgia Aquarium, and any concerts in the arena. A must try is Honey Bubble and walking around Peidmont Park. The Regent Cocktail Club is a good place for a view and a drink.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am very blessed and thankful to be surrounded by many great friends and families. My mentor and professional colleague, Rob, who has been a part of my professional growth for the last eight years. Another shout-out is to Steven for his leadership skills, and Heather for her continued support and reminders of what’s important in life. In addition, my parents raised me to be hardworking and dedicated. Last but not least, Brett, who has been my number one fan and supporter – I would not be the person I am without his continued encouragement.
