We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Santiago and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karla, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From a young age, I felt a deep connection to art. Creativity has always been a driving force in my life. While I considered other paths, nothing resonated as deeply as the arts. My parents, both immigrants, made incredible sacrifices so I could have better opportunities. Seeing their dedication and sacrifices motivated me to embrace my artistic passions and pursue a creative career that provides a unique platform to honor their hard work and share my perspective, influenced by both my heritage and my personal experiences.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Throughout art school, I experimented with various fashion mediums and subjects, ultimately discovering a passion for menswear tailoring. However, what sets my designs apart from others is I’m particularly drawn to reimagining traditional silhouettes by incorporating feminine elements. Sustainability is also a core value of mine. I am aware that the fashion industry has one of the top negative impacts on the environment, so I strive to integrate eco-friendly practices into my design process.

Currently, as a SCAD senior, I’m developing my final collection. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase my creativity and the skills I’ve honed. While the next few months will undoubtedly be intense, I’m eager to push my boundaries and produce a collection that reflects my unique vision.

My time at SCAD has been transformative. The school’s emphasis on creativity fostered my growth but also presented challenges. At times, I struggled with self-doubt and found myself drowing in anxiety, feeling overwhelmed by the competitive atmosphere. However, entering my final year, I’m determined to trust my instincts and let my creativity flow freely. I had to learn to stop overthinking because, at the end of the day, it is the killer of my creativity.

As a first-generation Mexican American and the first in my family to pursue a creative field, my heritage is a source of pride. While my heritage and inspirations throughout my life will always inform my perspective and designs, they are a part of my brand because they are me. I aspire to be recognized as a designer whose work transcends cultural boundaries. Ultimately, I envision my brand as an inclusive space for self-expression, offering sustainable designs that resonate with individuals who share my aesthetic.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a Georgia native, I’ve witnessed the state’s growing popularity firsthand. With so much to offer, it’s only fitting to start your exploration in Atlanta. The Georgia Aquarium, with its special events and collaborations (like the recent Animal Crossing exhibit!), is a great way to kick things off.
For a fun and inclusive atmosphere, Atlanta’s drag scene is thriving, offering fantastic brunch and evening shows. And when those late-night cravings hit, a relaxing drive to a personal favorite, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is a must.

For nature lovers, the Atlanta Botanical Garden is a truly stunning oasis. If you’re looking to venture beyond the city, the breathtaking landscapes of Tallulah and the charming town of Helen are not to be missed.

Finally, for a mix of delicious dining and unique shopping experiences, I would head to Buckhead, Little Five Points, or Ponce City Market. These areas are quite popular so people watching and seeing what outfits people put together is a bonus!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has been my unwavering support system from the very beginning. While they were initially apprehensive about the uncertainties and risks of a creative career, they’ve consistently championed my aspirations. Their love and encouragement have been invaluable, especially during late nights working on projects. They’ve lent a helping hand to take some stress off my shoulders and even stayed up with me on calls to offer companionship and motivation. My sister, Dafne, has been particularly instrumental in helping me overcome self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Whether through heartfelt conversations or quick pep talks, she’s always there to remind me of my abilities. I’m eternally grateful for their belief in me and the countless ways they’ve contributed to my journey.
