Meet Karla Russell

We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Russell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Access parents and students without limitations set by school curriculum, time spent on remediation and
curriculum and testing mandates.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Everyone has a calling or life purpose and mine just happens to be “teacher.” I knew I wanted to be a teacher at 5 years old. In my hometown Detroit, I taught my sisters and the neighbors on my front porch. I had an ability to relate to others and see what tasks or skills were a struggle for them. I was an advocate, way beyond my years as a teenager. I remember listening and giving my brother advice and he is 10 years older than I.
I notice where schools were failing minority and students with special needs. Teaching to the middle group leaves many youth behind and left to fail in school and standardized tests. I believe there are too many data driven goals, college focused curriculum vs vocational and entrepreneurial skills. Social Emotional learning and sex education are not taught comprehensively which leaves parents with little back up support to their values. Separation of church and state is a joke and can be dangerous when overly followed or unmonitored by zealot educators.
Tutoring is a way to help intentional parents and children partner to promote independent healthy young adults.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I enjoy music and dance so I would take them to some of my dance events where I meet up with my dance family twice weekly. Club Ellery’s in East Point GA on Thursday Chicago Style Steppers night and weekend spots like VFW in Decatur on Sundays, Skybox, Bottleship, AMC movies and of course The King Claw restaurant in Morrow.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success with parents and students are due to support for my education by parents, family and mentors.
Dedicated and genuine school and college educators taught me how to navigate a sometimes unfair and outdated education system. I always enjoyed learning and observing people I respect and that is how I keep mentors today, even at my age.
