We had the good fortune of connecting with Karimah Arnea and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karimah, why did you pursue a creative career?
For me, art was always something I found a way to include into my everyday life. Even as a kid I’d try to turn every single school project into an art project. There’s nothing I enjoy more. It just made sense for me to pursue it as a career. There’s so many things I’m able to do and enjoy doing so the options were endless. My main focuses are painting and music but I am always searching for more artsy hobbies to expand my brand.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For me I pride myself in being able to do a number of things. I’ve never been a bragger or cocky person but whenever someone asks “can you do this”, my reply is always “I can do anything.” I get excited to reach new milestones and to just create new projects. My mind is always running so the bigger the project, the happier I am. I practice a lot. Whether it be sketching daily or making rough drafts of songs I’ll probably never release. For awhile I’d get scared to step out, just release, and be “Karimah.” After awhile I realized that I no one else can do things the way I do because no one else is ME. I want the world to know or never expect just one thing from me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well first, I’d probably cook for them. I’ve been vegan/vegetarian for a couple years now and love experimenting with new recipes. Me and all my friends love being outside and enjoying the day so I’d probably take them to Sweet Water Creek where we can hike the trail and paddle boat. We also love taking pictures so I’d definitely plan some dope shoots. Maybe choose some shoot locations in the city as well as creating a set. I’d also take them to Sweet hut Bakery in midtown then head to Piedmont Park for a picnic and to ride scooters (I’m a big kid lol). I’m not much of a drinker, but I’d love to take them to sugar factory. I’m a big thrifter so we’d definitely have to have a couple shopping days hitting up as many thrift stores as possible. All my friends are creatives so we’d definitely have some jamming sessions.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s been many people to nurture my growth and talents along the way but I’d like to appreciate my grandma who sparked my creativity as a child. She always invited me to work on an art project with her, watch all sorts of artsy movies (even the ones that were too mature for me lol), and always told me vivid stories about her life and experiences. She’d call me “biker chick” because I was never afraid to experience or do something wild and fun. She taught me to always be myself and to never apologize for it. I wish she was still here now to see my growth, progress, and talk about all the crazy things that’s happened but I know she’s proud.
