We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Rogers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Growing up, I always loved to write, and I decided one day that I had to take that leap! I feared that people would not like my writing, and I feared criticism. After losing my sister, Lisa, in 2020, both my in-laws and my son, Dwight, in 2021, I decided I needed to get my book out there. I had to tell myself it would be okay and stop doubting myself. Tomorrow is never promised, and I did not want to have any regrets about getting my books published.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an Elementary School Counselor who helps children with their social/emotional, academic, and career needs. Before I became a School Counselor, I was an Administrative Assistant for years and much of my time after school was focused on my three children. I wanted to ensure they succeeded in academics, sports, and theater. After they went off to college or the military and started to move out of the home, I decided to go back to college to get a Master Degree in School Counseling. Before returning to school in 2017, I had written most of my book within two years. I put my book to the side and promised myself I would return to it once I finished school. I graduated with my first Masters in 2019 and decided to work on my Master Degree in Educational Specialist. In 2020, my life changed, and I was blessed to get a new job as a School Counselor, and I went back to rearranging my book for publishing. The hardest thing for me was finding someone to publish my book. I eventually came across Amazon KDP, and it all began in February 2022 when I published my first book, Sapphire in Rhapsody – A Window to the Soul.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A shoutout to my husband, Dwight, Sr., my children, Alexis and Arin, and my seven grandchildren. A special shoutout to my mom, Lydia Meadows, my sister, Yolanda, for critiquing my writing, and my brother, Alfred. Also, a massive shoutout to the Cleveland Academy of Leadership students for their smiles and hugs, which brought me much joy and helped me through my grief.
