We had the good fortune of connecting with Kani Richards and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kani, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Working jobs that did not fulfill my passion or who I am as a person was getting exhausting. I was in a cycle of working jobs for only a month due to not being able to handle working for someone else and not being in full control of my schedule. I wanted to show my creative talents and be able to receive funds for it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am most proud of the consistency. I started face painting while I still worked at Parish every Thursday. The beginning of face painting was me calling different agencies. I worked for one and got indirectly fired due to not having enough experience. I began to practice more and set up a small table outside of festivals and soon began to attract more clients.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Ethiopian food, so I would definitely bring them to Bole. I also like hiking and being away from sound/air/etc pollution so taking a hike at Arabia Mountain or soaking in Sweetwater. Another favorite restaurant is Chelsea’s, vegan Jamaican food is absolutely genius plus they give huge portions of food. I don’t really go out that much, so that’s all of the places that I can think of right now!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Thank you Monica Glover @skinzartatl and Luz Cruz @luzpaintsfaces for your guidance and helping me be the face/body painter I am today 🙂
