We had the good fortune of connecting with Kanesha Petit-Phar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kanesha, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is to stay curious. Is there a new or better way to capture and showcase my clients? Is there a better product or an upgrade I should invest in? Is there a workshop or class I can take? Was my interaction and service just satisfactory, or can I do better? That thirst for what more can be done, just being curious, has been the most important lesson since starting back in 2019.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has been a beautiful weave of visual storytelling, community building, and creative leadership. It all began in grade school, when I first learned how to use a camera, and later, in 2019, I took that early spark and launched my own photography business. What started as portrait and event shoots quickly evolved into content creation, creative direction, and full-scale brand storytelling.

Today, I’m honored to serve as the Community Engagement Coordinator for Toontown Rewritten, a fan-powered nonprofit revival of a beloved online game. In that role, I work every day to foster connection, spark enthusiasm, and bring our community together, both online and at real-world events. I also stepped into the role of Marketing Director for ToonFest, our annual in-person convention, and while that title wraps up after the event, it’s been an incredible opportunity to shape a moment that matters for our fans.

In addition to my work in gaming and events, I’m also a PR & Marketing Specialist with Virtual Solutions by KeyKey, a branding and marketing agency founded by my sorority sister. Getting to collaborate with someone I’ve grown alongside—personally and professionally- has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. At VSbyKeyKey, I support small businesses in refining their voice, growing their reach, and showing up with confidence in both digital and real-world spaces.

What makes me stand out is the way I blend creative vision with thoughtful process. My photography background taught me how to capture stories visually and with intention. Meanwhile, running a business showed me how to manage projects, budgets, client relationships, and pivot when needed. Supporting people’s life transitions as a trained doula further deepened my skills in empathy, listening, and leadership—qualities that fuel everything I do as a coordinator and director.

My path hasn’t always been smooth. It’s meant stepping between worlds: a visual artist, community leader, marketer…without a single set lane. I’ve encountered doubters, tight resources, and moments of uncertainty. The way I overcame it? By leaning into community, building trust step by step, and staying grounded in values like care, collaboration, and inclusion.

Through every campaign, every event, every photo, my focus remains the same: create experiences that feel thoughtful, human, and true to our community’s heart. I want people to know I believe in the power of bringing your full self to your work. Whether I’m behind a camera lens, organizing a fan gathering, or crafting a marketing campaign, my aim is always intentionality and heart.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmm…. in no particular order:
– Jeju Korean spa
– L5P to check out some vinyls and vintage tees
– Big Door Vineyards (yes, I know it’s a drive, but the view and vibes are nice)
– Jang Su Jang for Korean food
– Xing Fu Tang for boba no discussions.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out my family: blood and chosen family, as I would not be where I am today without them. The late-night calls, random texts to ask if they could spare a glance at some video drafts, or even thinking about me to send me a how-to clip or a workshop. It truly takes a village, and I could not ask for a more supportive one.
