We had the good fortune of connecting with Kami Symone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kami, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought behind starting my business was creativity and passion. I’ve been so creative since I was a little girl, I say around 7 or 9. Just always knew how to work different programs. Microsoft PowerPoint was my favorite. When I was in the 8th grade I had to present a PowerPoint to move on to high school and I did so well that so many people asked me to help them with theirs! After that I just had a passion for technology! Anything you needed I can get it done!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a graphic designer what sets me apart from others is that I’m more of a simplistic designer. I believe less is more and also professional. I always shadow the top brands in the world and notice that they don’t do a lot to get the point across and that is very much me as a graphic designer. I am very proud of my growth as a creative. At the beginning, I would be afraid to take on clients due to my anxiety but now taking clients is what keeps me going. I am able to show off my creativeness and also help brands grow. I started off working with many beauty brands. Now I’m working with so many different industries, such as chefs, nurses, NFL players, logistics, and so much more. It took a lot of hard work and dedication to get where I am today. I don’t believe it was hard at all because I genuinely have a passion for what I’m doing. The best part is I get to help others WIN. In my career, I learned to never give up. As a small business owner things get hard, the money gets slow but you cannot give up especially when you’re doing something you love. I started Kami Symone The Brand in college, my junior year to be exact. I always had a passion for technology. I would literally sit on the computer all day as a kid. Every time my family needed help with the computer they would call me, even at 11 years old, which is insane because I would actually help them. While in college I begin to make snapchat filters, for birthday parties, proms, graduations, weddings and more. I had clients from Texas, Florida, Illinois, Alabama, Georgia, and more. Eventually I started to do logos, flyers, and etc. Building my brand was literally the best thing that could’ve happened to me. It helped me build a lot of confidence, and helped me leave all my fears behind.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love nature so start the day I would probably take my best friend somewhere for a walk. After that we could grab lunch. As of right now I live in Chicago, my go to for lunch is Aint She Sweet. We are definitely going to visit the Skydeck where you can see the entire city of Chicago in the daytime. I love to sleep, so we can add a nap in there somewhere. Then the real fun begin after our nap. Downtown Chicago is my absolutely favorite in the evening so many rooftops where we can see the amazing skyline. Before the rooftop we would definitely grab dinner at Wildfire another of my favorites never disappoints me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many clients that inspire me! My favorite is Nurse Queen. She’s a registered nurse continuing her education. She guides nursing students and other nurses to maximize their nursing degree!
