We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalil ROS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kalil ROS, what matters most to you?
I want to always put out music that is uplifting and inspiring. One thing you will never find on a Kalil ROS record is cursing, violence, the degradation of our queens, and drugs. I could care less if that makes people call me ‘corny’ or ‘soft’. I can’t just say anything to make the song sound catchy or have filler in there. When you’re writing for God, you have to really think first before putting the pen to paper. I believe that God gives everyone a purpose and mine is to write songs to influence people in a positive way — therefore, my choice is to make music that serves HIS purpose.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a hip-hop artist that writes music that touches the soul, but also talks on important issues, whether it’s police brutality, suicide, sex trafficking, etc. What is unique about my music is that it always shows the listener that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and you can always find a way out of and up from your struggle. Most importantly, you can gain healing from getting close to God.
What sets my music apart is that it is hard to categorize into one genre — it is hip-hop with contemporary and neo-soul vibes, that could also be played on any gospel station, as well as any secular station.
To be successful at what I do is never easy, but I have to stay on my path and hold on to the feeling of excitement that comes up whenever I write — embrace each time like it’s the first.
Over time I’ve learned to never allow discouragement to completely take over and push me to quit. I come across challenges and obstacles, but never anything that is an end-all. Always believe in your artistry, even if no one else does.
I want the world to know that Kalil ROS is a man of God who is here to stay and will always spread His Word through my music, and I will always have truth in my music.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the museums downtown, including the Martin Luther King exhibit. I would also take them to the Atlanta Beltline where you can walk around and meet people and see the neighborhoods and get something good to eat.
We would stop at the New Black Wall Street Mall that has good music and is full of Black vendors that sell art, clothes, hats, books, and food.
We would definitely hit Weeyums philly cheesesteaks in Stone Mountain (FIRE), and Spondivits seafood in East Point, Atlanta.
I would also take them to to Nancy’s Pizzeria in Conyers, GA, that has a DJ and karaoke on Fridays.
Any time there is a festival going on (and Atlanta has many), that would be somewhere I would take my guests.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of all, I want to shout out God for blessing me with the gift of words, and for giving me the choice on how to use them. And I also want to shout out my wife for always being there for me and who supports me, and who always gives me that extra push when I need it, and never allows me to quit. I also want to shout out Life Change Ministries (Pastor Ronald Williams) for welcoming me as I am and allowing me to bless their stage. Shout out to all of the producers that I have worked with — Sultan, Akili, Joseph Stewart, and Natrell Anderson. I also want to shout out Jenisis Praise, Jazzy Vocalist Rah, Summer Garcia, and Kyss Kyss for always being there anytime I needed vocalists.
