We had the good fortune of connecting with Kadian Nellums and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kadian, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Cooking was something that was in my household for as long as I can remember. My first words were food to be exact.. I have spent years working in the hospitality industry being that Food & Beverage was my major. Even though I worked for someone, I always knew that someday I was going to be my own boss, but I wasn’t sure how. Cooking was a skill that I always had a knack for. I loved cooking and making people happy through food. I started thinking why not embrace my cooking side and that is how Ways OF Eating & Drinking (WOED for short) was born. We are a Jamaican food truck serving up mouth watering dishes native to the island that reminds our costumers of home.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Ways Of Eating & Drinking LLC aims to offer people a new way of experiencing Jamaican cuisine. We are a family-based company created on the foundation of good food, great conversation, and overall great experience. Our company creates food that infuses the comfort of authentic Jamaican culture that brings people together in a happy environment which leaves you wanting more.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Birmingham is known for it’s little gems around the city from local eateries to bars. Few places that come to mind when we talk about such gem. Plum Bar which offers great drinks and live entertainment, Dirty Ashes a local bar that offer great drinks accompanied by amazing cigars, Bizzare Coffee Bar that offers food as well as coffee drinks some of which are infused with alcohol, Yo Mamas Restaurant and Ruth’s Place both offers great southern style comfort food.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a circle of friends who I must say have walked with me on this journey. Whether it’s offering emotional support, to jumping in a giving a hand on the truck or simply aiding in figuring out new and different strategies that will improve business. To them I owe a huge thank you and will be forever grateful.
