We had the good fortune of connecting with Kadesha Adelakun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kadesha, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The single most important decision that I’ve made that contributed to my success was to truly be my authentic self…a Black therapist and not a therapist who happens to be Black. Before I am a female, a daughter, a wife, a mom, a therapist, I am Black! If anyone is to see me, personally or professionally, they need to see all of me! Professionally, this meant that although I happily and proudly see clients of all races, cultures, and ethnicities, I wanted my practice to center Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) who lives in a society where they (we) are not centered.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Journey Counseling Services is a group private practice located in Kennesaw, GA. We see children ages 3 and up, adults, and couples. In our diverse world, where most therapists are White and female, often serving many clients, who are Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), we are extremely proud that all three therapists are Black and one out of the three is a male. The Journey Counseling Services happily serves all clients, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, and gender expression, however, many BIPOC often prefer to see a BIPOC therapist, where they feel more comfortable, feel seen, and feel heard! With all of our combined experiences, we are able to assist clients struggling with Anxiety/Stress, Depression, Adjustment, Life-transitions, Divorce, Grief/Loss, Infertility, Prenatal and Postpartum Depression and Anxiety, Marital and Premarital concerns, Racial Trauma, Self-Esteem, Chronic illness, Career counseling, Phobias, Trauma and PTSD, ADHD, Social Skills, Mindfulness, OCD, Self-Harm, Behavioral Challenges, and several other challenges or concerns.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I honestly don’t go out much, however, if I had a friend in town, we’d definitely go check out The Busy Bee Cafe in Atlanta. It’s apart of local Black history and the food is so good! Another restaurant that we’d go check out is Fish Thyme. Coincidentally, that is another Black owned restaurant and I just love the atmosphere, service, and of course, the food! Whenever I have a friend visit, I usually ask them what kind of things they’d like to do or go, but those two restaurants are always ones that I suggest we go.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been blessed to have several supportive family members, friends, and colleagues, that it’s difficult to name just one.
