We had the good fortune of connecting with Kacie Lett Gordon and Katie Louise Mullins we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kacie and Katie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
A mantra in our company is “when we live boldly, we invite others to do the same.” Our business was created during what we call and a Fuck “It All” (FIA) Moment: a moment in time where one intentionally chooses what is best for yourself above all else; this may be in opposition to expectations or “norms” of society, family, community and/or earlier self.
This a time of transition when often only bold moves propel us forward.
When we first founded IT ALL Media, we met with a production studio. A member of their team told us, “Thank you for taking yourself seriously.” As women building our own business, we are leading with intuition. My business partner’s personal mantra is “burn the ships” – we are at our best when we trust ourselves and our decisions. That often means that we have to take huge risks sans safety nets. We have found, that our bold moves have made us the best versions of ourselves and have enabled us to begin to build the life and business we want for ourselves. It has also encouraged many around us to take a leap as well. All that said, risks are never taken without some fear and best in good company.
What should our readers know about your business?
IT ALL Media is a home for the new stories that define us and the conversations women want to have. We co-founded IAM in 2021, we’re (Kacie Lett Gordon (KLG) and Katie Louise Mullins (KLM) business partners, neighbors, and best friends of almost 12 years.
In November of 2020, Kacie began the Fuck “IT All” Podcast. Amidst her own personal reckoning (what we now come to a call an FIA moment (see above*); she set out to ask the question, “What does it mean to have it all?” In the months that followed, we sat down with 100s women to ask and answer the same question.
Here’s what we learned:
1. Modern womanhood includes tensions and impossible standards of a stereotypical “it all” that leads to feelings of inadequacy, insecurity, unfulfillment and unhappiness.
2. A system performs exactly how it’s designed; our systems were not designed by or for women and/or non-traditional paths.
3. We cannot be what we don’t see; there is a deficit in narratives of women living life on their own terms.
It was with this knowledge, a restless discontent for something more and a bias towards action, Kacie called Katie who was living in Washington D.C. (having just moved their from Thailand at the start of the pandemic) and asked her to move, again – this time to Atlanta to build IT ALL Media together. Katie called back three hours with a resounding “yes”.
Today, IAM is a modern media empire inspired by and devoted to women (un)doing “it all.” It exists to tell new stories, amplify real women’s voices, and facilitate a movement through conversation to affirm and build women’s power to define, create and own their ‘all.’ We are storytellers and facilitators, and thus created a media company because we KNOW the power of story. Systems are built upon the stories we tell and the narratives we believe. By starting with individual stories, we unlock the collective power to rewrite the narratives, and through conversation, redefine the systems that run our lives – at home, at work, and in our community.
As best friends in business, we were confronted early with warnings and horror stories entailing the risks of our new venture. But we’re committed to building differently, building sustainably, and most of all rewriting old narratives that no longer serve us. To quote author (and FIA Podcast guest) Elizabeth Lesser, “When women are the storytellers, the human story changes.”
Entrepreneurship has been a great (un)learning for us. We’ve both had to break habits and let go of old beliefs from our former lives… and the personal growth, well, that has given us both stretch marks. Another core values of our business is “walking with” – in other words, we are experts at learning in public. We don’t have the answers, or sometimes even the questions, but we are modeling what it is to sit in “the mess,” be curious, and learn together. We are here to document IT ALL.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, the unofficial bar of IAM is Banshee. So let’s start with a cocktail, always. Jazz night at the High Museum
Amore e Amore for espresso martinis and tiramisu
Bar Margot and St. Regis Bar when we wanna feel fancy.
The Lola (send a few emails and/or grab a coffee with some of ATL’s creative and brilliant entrepreneurs)
Tesoro (need I say more)
Mezcalitos Decatur
Del Bar
Lyla Lila
Atlanta Zoo (my daughter loves the train)
Big Softie (this might be our second office)
ATL Beltline and or walks around the east side neighborhoods with a coffee (East Side for life!)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We’d like to dedicate this Shoutout to the brave women intentionally redefining what it means to have “it all”. Our company, IT ALL Media, is inspired by and devoted to you. We are on a mission to walk with women through storytelling and conversation amidst a collective awakening to define, create and own our “it all” that reflects and honors the power and dynamism of modern womanhood.
