We had the good fortune of connecting with K Renee Horton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi K Renee, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe the most important factor behind my success is my transparency and willingness to critique myself and accept others critique. I acknowledge I don’t know hardly anything about business and I’m constantly looking for the technique that’ll get me to my next level. I often reevaluate where I am and identify ways in which I want to grow in business and as a brand. So far this has worked but hasn’t netted me the money level I would like to be at in the next three years.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe the fact that I’m an everyday type of girl with all my accomplishments sets me apart from others. I’m excited about my level of accomplishments that I’ve achieved as a person with disabilities and I’m most proud of the fact I was named Louisianian of the year in 2019 and in 2020 was inducted into the LSU Alumni Hall of Distinction. I’m currently super excited about my Freedom to Read program where I’ve partnered with community members to provide books to kids in the community to create them a library at home to build reading skills and family interactions.

How did you get to where you are today professionally.

I have a non traditional path with my career. I dropped out of college at 18 after struggling with my hearing loss diagnosis. I returned back to school after 9 years with three kids. I credit the fact that I was focused on achieving my goals, not other people’s goals or expectations for my success professionally. I tried to always solve my hurdles or obstacles first with my current resources before reaching out. I’ve always been realistic with myself on my limitations and I believe there’s always a solution so think outside of the box.

Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?

It wasn’t always easy, honestly it’s not always easy even now. I gave up wanting instant gratification so now I’m willing to make bigger sacrifices for my overall goals. I’m in competition with myself daily and my goal is to better at what I’m doing the next day, than I was the day or week before.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.

Be true to yourself
Define your core values and live by them.
Know if it doesn’t make you feel good, it’s probably not good.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story? I’m here because I want all of us to win the game we are individually playing. There’s room for all of us if we do it together. My brand and what you see is my transparent truth and honesty.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start a week long trip with a welcome at my place on the bayou, dinner cooked by me with a welcome charcuterie board from grazedat. We would have banana pudding cupcakes from Simply Pastries LLC we would spend the rest of the evening catching up.

The next two days we would hit a couple of spots like cafe du monde in city park and the art galleries down by Jackson square.

A few restaurants on my list would be Barrow’s catfish, Dooky Chase, Willie Mae’s Scotch house, and Caribbean mini mart for oxtails.

I would also spend a day pampering us at my nail tech for some mani and pedis with Mylin at Golden Nails, massages with Ron Brister and facials with TruVine Esthestics.

We would end the days doing music with tea or wine overlooking the water.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mentors in the National Society of Black Physicists, my parents for allowing me to explore and my tribe for keeping me grounded as my life changes with success.
