We had the good fortune of connecting with K.M. Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi K.M., what role has risk played in your life or career?
Like with any skill in my business, I started small with risk-taking and learned to be brave. Over time, I built up myself within my business and became fearless which has allowed me to accomplish incredible things despite not all of my risks panning out as hoped.
There was a time when I was terrified to ask for collaborations with others—now I don’t bat an eyelash. When I was starting out, I didn’t love public speaking or being on livestreams and now I can walk onto any stage and give a full hour presentation with zero prep time. I’ve learned to ask for what I want or need in my business, and while I may not get it every time, my confidence and security in my risk-taking have allowed me to get it a lot more often than I used to. When people see that confidence, they’re much more likely to work with me.
My personal life is not a place where I take many risks, but in my business, I have become fearless—and it’s because I’m fighting for something (my brand and my followers) rather than doing it for myself. The more I took small steps that felt rebellious or dangerous in the moment, the easier it became for me to take big, bold steps forward after that. The more I was told no on something, the more comfortable I felt failing publicly and picking myself back up. And even when someone told me no or that I couldn’t, the times I was told yes empowered me to try a little bit bigger the next time. I now live in a stage where I’m told yes way more than I’m told no and the no responses never prevent me from immediately pivoting and finding something better.
I started small and built my way up to being fearless in my business and now I very, very rarely hesitate on anything inside my career, particularly because I’ve seen the effects these big moments have on my students, followers, and fans once I accomplish something for them.
I learned how to put myself out there one small step at a time and along the way, I had doors opened to me for speaking on big stages and massive events, collaborating with huge celebrities, features on multiple national news networks, book deals, and sponsorship opportunities with international companies who learned my name because of my big, bold work in the industry. Allowing myself to fail and succeed publicly, figuring out how to get better after each opportunity, and constantly stepping outside of my comfort zone to grow have revolutionized my businesses.
Doing small things every single day to push your personal boundaries just a bit and building up to the bigger things is the best advice I can give to other entrepreneurs looking to grow in their industry. It doesn’t have to be a big overnight revolution…it can be a series of small steps that build over time and change the course of your entire business.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a social media marketing educator that helps entrepreneurs learn how to use and leverage free social media marketing to create more profit in their businesses and build community and conversation with their followers. I specialize in Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, livestreaming, and technology and have been featured on multiple national news networks, major publications/magazines/websites/etc, working in a sponsored capacity with many major international companies, and have been able to travel the country speaking and educating on stages to help brand owners grow and create content without stress and overwhelm. I’m also a multi-time bestselling fiction author.
I love working with entrepreneurs to help them make content creation easy, fun, and profitable without having to rely on ads, virtual assistance, etc. I run Livestream Action Plan that helps businesses do one really big and important livestream in their business per month in a done-with-them, fill-in-the-blank-and-go-live capacity. I also run IG Reels for Business that helps smart entrepreneurs to create a month’s worth of Reels/TikToks in an hour. I’ve got several other programs that help to take the work out of social and online presences as well so brand owners can focus on what they really love while also supporting their fans and followers!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a content queen, so I always look for fun places to create content while we’re out and about! I love everything from fancy, glittery restaurants to interesting parks to mundane things most people overlook but are stunning with a creative’s eye overseeing it.
If I have people visiting, I typically try to take them to some of the more touristy things (because you have to see things while in the area, right?) and mix it in with places you wouldn’t find on any travel guide. I also really enjoy figuring things out as we go, so while there are a few staple places I’d visit, I’m also super open to seeing what we stumble across, time-specific events happening, and where my guest feels they’d want to visit!
If there are places we can take photos and videos, I’m there!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My business education really started with a company called CreativeLive. They produced livestream multi-day presentations with photographer leaders on different topics in the field. Eventually they branched out into business areas outside of photography, but I found incredible mentors through their free-to-watch-live platform, learned about the benefits of livestreaming and free education, memberships, etc through years of involvement with their productions. Nothing in my businesses would be the same without that company offering thousands of people free, real-time education with valued industry leaders and specialists. I learned everything that grounded my companies from CreativeLive adn I couldn’t be more grateful!
