We had the good fortune of connecting with K. Brat and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi K., what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always enjoyed music at a very young age. I began writing music when I was about 7 years old because I always wanted to be a R&B singer. My mom and uncle were very interested in the arts in high school and even college. Over time my uncle started his own music career and became my vocal coach at the age of 5 years old. Music has been apart of my life for a very long time, but becoming a female rapper is a talent that I never knew I had. I listened to rap as a kid and even taught myself how to rap fast like Busta Rhymes, and Nicki Minaj but never saw a career for myself until I was 20 years old. A close friend whom is also a Rapper, Big Yavo was my go to person who encouraged me to show my hidden talent to the world. My mom (Tina) and Bestfriend (Diera) were the ones who pushed me to the forefront and gave me my stage name. Rapping as a form of expression is a blessing from God. I began by freestyling which was a success, then went on to perform and open up for other artists. After winning my very first talent show and opening up for Rubberband OG I knew that rapping was a talent gifted to me by God.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, I go by K.Brat as a kid my parents nicknamed me Brat because I always had to have things my way. I’m different from other artist because I literally come from a city where people die everyday and it’s always someone you know. Being from Birmingham and being a female rapper has set me apart from a lot of artists because you really have to grind within our city and there is not a lot of female artists from Birmingham. My message to young men and women also sets me apart, I always tell people you can still be a gangsta and be smart at the same time, there’s nothing cool about being uneducated and ignorant. I started my career as a rapper in 2020 and I have had personal challenges along the way but I’ve accomplished so much by keeping my faith in God, and making connections with those who can benefit my career and I can benefit theirs. My mom being sick and losing both grandmothers along with a cousin in 2020 was a setback I was not prepared for. It took a toll on my mental health causing severe depression and suicidal thoughts/actions, I stopped doing music for 6 months in 2022 because being the oldest I had to place these burdens on my back. My mom being sick and fighting for her life caused my family to suffer in which I had to take on a lot of responsibilities. I even have had drama from past relationships and friendships resurface. Although, I have suffered many major blows God still wakes me up and allows me to be able to get in the studio and use my voice as an instrument. God has many blessings with my name on it before 2022 is over many people will know who K.Brat is. I want the world to know that K.Brat is a mogul in the making and that she will be on the face of every magazine, Billboard, radio station, anything you can think of I’ll be on it!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My bestfriend and I are both from Birmingham but we do have cool spots that we like to frequent from time to time. I would first start off by having brunch at Ruby Sunshine’s in Homewood have some chicken and waffles with mimosas, we’d then go to railroad park, walk around and get on the electric scooters, Casanova or Cru downtown Birmingham is where you go for a vibe and alcohol and for dinner we would eat at J.Alexander’s because they have the best food hands down and the best lemon drop I’ve ever had. That is what a day in Birmingham with K.Brat and Diera would be like besides all the violence.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to a few important people in my life that has been on this journey with me. My mom has been my manager and my go to person through the storm of being an artist. She has molded me and encouraged me even when I had no strength on my own even while she has been sick. My family as a whole has always supported my dreams more than outsiders and I love them so much and I’m forever grateful for it. My bestfriend and my boyfriend are two of my other major players in my life because they go above and beyond for K.Brat. Even if it’s just listening to me vent they have my back and are able to guide me when I’m lost or even feeling discouraged because the music industry can take a toll on your mental health.
Shoutout,
Tina Hicks & Family (Mom), Diera Robinson (Bestfriend), and Higee Peterson (Boyfriend)
