We had the good fortune of connecting with Justine Feitelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justine, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think balance itself if a bit of an illusion. We’re always trying to find our way back to homeostasis. To me, you cannot accomplish something without putting the time in and not doing some of the things others are doing. This does not mean I’m sacrificing or doing things I don’t want to. It’s a choice. And it’s one that earlier on in business, looks different than as you progress a bit with hopefully being able to shift into a more sustainable approach, and incorporate more aspects of your life besides work, no matter how much you love it.
Balance looks different in different seasons and depending on your goals. The key is to not hyperfocus to the point of burnout, or losing aspects of yourself or your life you value. And making an effort to catch yourself when self care may start to slip, or other areas if your life are being neglected you may also value. Then, adjust, and find your way more back to center again.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am most proud of what I have accomplished despite living in constant pain and having every reason not to pursue what I have. There were not other examples of people doing what I was doing with this population. What most sets me apart from others besides my empathy and determination, is my experience both as a patient and clinician. I am a rare combination that is able to speak to both groups from experience both having lived with and seen the patterns we deal with as complex pain patients. I overcame the challenges of entrepreneurship by simply not being willing to give up. By focusing on my effort and what I could control rather than the outcome – similar to my diseases themselves. Resilient Warrior Coaching is about being brave enough to bet on yourself, follow your dreams, fight for purpose, and persevere despite the odds. My clients inspire me as much as they say I inspire them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a creature of habit who is guilty of taking a lot of the peeps who visit me to the same local spots! I’m from San Diego, so there’s no shortage of good locations, but it’s usually got to include some combination of classic taco shops like Roberto’s or Sancho’s up in Oceanside, coffee shops like Birdrock, and some nice photography/surf/food spots along the Del Mar beach, Pacific Beach, Encinitas or the Solana Beach,Torrey Pines area nearby!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Since August of last year, I’ve been working hard with some Pain Physicians/Interventionists in the medical industry on two projects, specifically Dr. Dan Bates out of Australia on the It’s Not in Your Head Podcast and Dr. Krishnan Chakravarthy out of California on the Empower You Chronic Pain Foundation – both aimed at improving patient/provider relationships and how we understand and treat chronic pain. Even though we’re just getting started, they’ve been instrumental forces in growing my perspective and knowledge, and empowering me to further create the impact I want in challenging the status quo with how we treat complex patients, and better bridging the gap that is too wide between our groups. It’s been a fulfilling and joyful process to work with others equally as passionate about improving access and outcomes in a way that so compliments my solopreneur work with Resilient Warrior Coaching.
