We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Scott-Wesley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Before starting a business I would encourage everyone to figure out WHY they are starting said business. We all know the fundamental of goal business is to turn a profit, but most successful business generate revenue by solving a problem or providing a services that makes the world a better place. If you begin with the goal of mailing money then you may not last, because most business are not profitable in the beginning. If you strive to help people or make the world a better place then the process of doing business will not seem so stressful.

Now that you have you WHY, let’s talk finance!

You should always understand the cost of doing the business you choose to do. What are the start up costs? What are the on-expenses? What is your budget for marketing? Do you need equipment, vehicles, supplies, ect? While, Some businesses do not require as much startup capital as others it helps to have a general idea of all the things needed to get your business up and running. It would behoove you to have a plan for the money you make in business. Some business owners fall in to the trap of spending business profits on personal expenses. Doing so can cause a lack of capital needed for important business operations. I have a general rule of thumb for money made in businesses. “Money in keeps business alive. Money out, the business dies.”

If you operate a business you are going to spend money. Its inevitable. Do your best to spend money on things that will make the business grow.

What should our readers know about your business?
In my business I serve as a trusted financial advisor for individuals, families, and businesses. My firm can help clients with most things financially related. This includes, but not limited to: Retirement Planning, Wealth Management, Insurance, Accounting & Bookkeeping and Tax preparation.

I believe the thing that sets my business apart is our willingness go above and beyond to put the client’s need above my own. Expertise and Customer service is where our core values lie.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love food so I’m always look for great places to eat. One of my Favorite Spots is Ray’s on the River. If you like Steak Joey’s Oak Room has a Delmonico Ribeye that’s to die for. I’m a huge fan of roof top bars and Atlanta has a great selection of them. The Rooftop bar at Ponce City Market is a very popular one.

I’m a family man, so most of the things I like to do are family oriented. We go hang out at Truist Park at the Battery when the braves playing away games. They broadcast the game and I like the watch my son run around and play baseball with other kids. We like to walk the beltline and try to find different places to eat. Sometimes my wife and I go hiking Kennesaw mountain and we frequent the different Trails in Dunwoody.

I’m probably not the best person to ask this question to you. I’m never not working.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I’d like to give a big shoutout to my clients. It is extremely humbling that they see me as a trusted advisor. That is something I don’t take lightly. I do my best to provide first-class services and up to date expertise.

I’d like to thank my family and My Wife for supporting my crazy dreams and ambitions. Sometimes when you are starting a new business venture the people closet to you may not see your vison and that alone can crush a person’s spirit. I’ve been blessed to have supportive family members and supportive souse that don’t look at me crazy every time a have to pivot in business.

Lastly, I’d like to thank all of the people who have poured into me as business mentors over the years. There many I can choose from, but I’d like to highlight the first people who really took me under their wings. I’d like to give a big shout out to Jontrice Wells and Clinton Smith of San Diego, California. They introduced me to the financial industry and gave me positive examples of how a financial professional serves the client. Life moves on and our careers have taken different routes, but I want them to know that the time I spent with them was very impactful to my life.
