Meet June Williams | Event Curator

We had the good fortune of connecting with June Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi June, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Having moved to Atlanta as a queer Caribbean individual, I was surprised by the absence of events that focused on Caribbean culture, music, and foods while still being a safe queer space. With the thriving and robust Caribbean and queer communities in Atlanta, I realized that people who identity similarly may have also struggled with this. This realization prompted me to take action and create a sanctuary where queer Caribbean individuals can let loose, socialize, and freely be themselves in a place that feels like home. Thus, Yard1292 was established.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As the event curator of Yard1292, I specialize in crafting unique experiences tailored to the needs and interests of the queer Caribbean community. What sets our events apart is our deep understanding of the community’s desires, allowing us to create inclusive spaces where everyone feels seen and celebrated.
I take great pride in the events we host and plan to host in the future, from vibrant parties and festivals, to community building activities. Each event is meticulously planned to foster connections, promote self-expression, and celebrate the rich tapestry of identities within the queer Caribbean community.
My journey to this role has been challenging, but each obstacle has served as a valuable learning experience. Building Yard1292 required dedication, perseverance, and a deep sense of purpose. I’ve had to overcome logistical hurdles, navigate cultural sensitivities, and rally support from allies and community members alike. Through it all, I’ve learned the importance of resilience, adaptability, and staying true to our mission – to create spaces where queer Caribbean individuals can exist authentically.
Ultimately, I want the world to know that Yard1292 is more than just events—it’s a beacon of belonging and empowerment for the queer Caribbean community. Our story is one of resilience, unity, and celebration, and I am honored to play a part in shaping its narrative.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a queer Caribbean in Atlanta, I frequent Piedmont park, Midtown, the Beltline and lots more. With the copious amounts of places to eat, celebrate, and learn in Atlanta, the options are limitless.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yard1292’s success is a result of the efforts, support, love, and encouragement from not only friends, but also the Atlanta queer Caribbean community who has welcomed us with open arms. I am profoundly thankful for the continued support throughout our journey. I would also like to thank my partner who has supported the vision and continues to play an intricate role in the success of Yard1292.
