We had the good fortune of connecting with Julius Tubbs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julius, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I worked at a gym for I think 3 to 4 years. Worked my way up to becoming a fitness manager. I felt my work ethic spoke for it self. I was good at it.

I got this job when I came home from prison. They never did a back ground check. They hired me as a program design specialist. I sold a lot of personal training to clients. I also worked another personal training job. Once I became fitness manager i felt I didn’t need to hide where I came from. But I was sadly mistaken. Once word got out I was a felon I was fired. That’s when I knew I had to start my own business. Having my own business I knew the only person that could fire me was me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I own and operate NCJ Digital a video production company based in New Jersey. What separates my business from most is i wanted my company to be a one stop shop and a good price. I focused on learning as much as I could about production. When someone hires us I want to give the highest level of production possible. Quality at a reasonable cost.

The thing I’m most excited about is the feature film we produced this year. My team was responsible for the production on the technical. We provided all the lights and camera equipment. We worked with a a couple of celebrities I grew up watching. It was an amazing experience. The movie is called Mr. Santa and I think it will be out this Christmas, staring Tommy Davidson and Geoffrey Owens.

They way I got to where I am today is based on true hard work and consistently learning. I learned everything I could about cameras, lighting and shooting. When I first started I just wanted to shoot. I shot any an everything. If a friend had some music and wanted to shoot a music video I did it for free. My goal was to take those moments and learn from them. As I learned the more I invested in my self and my company. In order to be successful i knew I had to be a problem solver. I needed to have things that others didn’t have access to. I made the investments and got the gear that was needed for production.

One of my biggest obstacles was connecting with the right people. To over come this I entered into a internship program called secret society. I watched these guys before my incarceration. When I came home from prison they took off and once I got fired from my job I entered into the program to learn as much as I could and make as many connections as I could. I reached out to people on instagram and Facebook. Thats what helped me.

I learned never give up. Stay focus and keep pushing. As a creative you are a problem solver. If you can solve a productions problem you are an asset.

My company is a one stop shop. I have a crew of talented creators. We focus on quality at reasonable rates. We offer a 1 ton grip truck, steadicam operator, high quality cinema cameras and much more. If you need production in New York, New Jersey, and Philly send us a email at info@ncjdigital.com

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t hang out much but when I do I hang at Belmar beach in the morning to relax. For lunch I’ll go to turning point in Toms River. Dinner would be at my house. If we wanted go out for some night life I would find a nice roof top bar in the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout my mother. After everything I put her through she still believed in me.
