We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Houck and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, what do you attribute your success to?
Dedication and hard work. Hours in front of the easel. Being diligent about marketing efforts and not giving up. I became a 20 year “overnight success” this way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am best known for my contemporary coastal landscapes and my ability to create light in the picture plane. It takes “hours in front of the easel” as one of my mentors used to say. Painting is 90% aspiration and 10% inspiration . You have to show up for your work and get into the studio like any other job commitment. Consistency is key as well as tenacity.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My instructors who taught at the classical ateliers I attended were invaluable in teaching me how to draft accurately as well as create light on form. My study with Ted Seth Jacobs in France was the keystone in my training. Ted me form and how to render light on form. Without his guidance, knowledge and instruction, my work would not have become what it is today.
