We had the good fortune of connecting with Joydan Sparks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joydan, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I feel like my business has helped make an impact on the community by giving women the opportunity and tools they need to create their own 6 figure lash business, as well as making my lash and brow clients feel beautiful.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Lashing is very therapeutic for me. Every since i lashed my first client, i truly enjoyed it. Of course, the actual technique wasn’t easy at first but I was so happy to finally be be making a living from something that I actually enjoyed doing and could create my own schedule.
I think that my personality and customer service is what sets me apart from any other lash artist or trainer. For my clients, I personally feel like I have a special relationship with them. I’ve had clients laugh and cry on my lash bed and Im always ready to pick up where we left off at their previous appointment. Lash artist are honestly therapist that make you look pretty!
I take pride in knowing that I’m offering my very best services and trainings and give as much information as possible for my students. I know that women come train with me from all over the country because they want to ultimately change their financial situation, so I always make sure they leave feeling confident and ready to take on the entrepreneurial world.
The story of how I got started is really crazy! I was in my last semester of senior year in college; I had about 6 credits left and was accepted into law school for the upcoming fall. I started doing lashes that March, and the week leading up the spring break, I had my first full week of back to back clients majority of that week. But, that was also midterm week. At that point, I had to make a decision. Do I study and take my midterms? OR should I miss them and do lashes all week? So I went with the second option, I made $576 that week from $30 lash sets (and as a broke college student, I felt like a millionaire) and that’s how lashing become my career.
It definitely wasn’t easy because I didn’t have support at all in the beginning. So many people had negative stuff to say about me dropping out of college and choosing lashes over law school. At first, it really upset me that people so close to me didn’t see my vision but that made me work even harder because I had something to prove.
The biggest lesson i’ve learned along the way is that if you truly believe something will happen for you, it will. I still remember being 21 years old planning out how I would be fully self employed by the age of 26. And not even six months after writing that, was when I dropped out to do lashes full time, right after I had turned 22.
My ultimate goal for my business is to help women become financially successful by doing something they love. I really enjoy hearing from students after they’ve made their first 6 figures from just lashing!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of the best restaurants in the city would be Atlanta Breakfast Club, Rock South, and The Pig and the Pearl.
For hangout spots, we’re usually at Lily’s Lounge, Zari and Copper Cove for hookah, drinks, and good vibes.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are SO many women that I looked up to when I was in the beginning stages of planning out my business! Whitney Turner (Owner of The Artistry Vault) was someone that I’ve always looked up to in the beauty industry. I’ve been following her on social media since I was in high school and watch her start her entrepreneurial career from the beginning. I loved the fact that she was always in her own lane when it came to the beauty industry, especially in Atlanta because it’s so over saturated and discouraging. Her story is very motivating and it played a huge role in my life when I dropped out of college to start my business.
