Meet Josi C | Singer, Songwriter, and Composer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Josi C and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josi, what do you attribute your success to?
Purpose. Every single moment I exist, I strive to fill with actions that serve a purpose that is important to me, one that sprouts from an uncomplicated love. I believe our bodies are the vehicles that house our souls, which is who we truly are. And we use what I call these “organic cars” to interact with the physical world; to taste, hear, see, smell, and touch. With my ADHD and being on the spectrum, it’s hard for me to identify with my physical self and tie it with a feeling of self-worth. My value comes from the sum of all of my intentions with whatever amount of life I have, and that’s to create beautiful experiences for those other souls around me that also do not know how much time they have to enjoy existing. I feel most proud when I make others feel good to have come across me in their life.
So living with this purpose and being genuine and transparent about what moves my soul and all the beautiful intangible things not tied to the physical is what sets me apart in many people’s eyes. I love to listen, so I can learn to soothe the ears of those within my presence.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a neurodivergent individual, diagnosed with ADHD and being on the spectrum, I’ve always felt “not of this world”. Common human problems that many hear and relate to, I’ve never felt. I don’t get upset about a parking ticket, I’ve never felt vengeful about an ex’s side escapades. Not having enough for my upcoming bill never stole any of my sleep. All derives from the same thing: my belief that we aren’t what we embody. Our bodies are our bvehicles, the tool to interact with physical things. I’ve always had a deeply encrusted feeling that we are the drivers of those organic cars. We are the souls. And we don’t get to choose what we drive. This notion teaches quintessential empathy; we could have been anyone we aren’t. With that in mind, what really calls my attention are the intangible things that all of us get to experience, no matter what walk of life was given to us. What falling in love feels like, what sadness, longing, hurt, etc feels like. I feel too many artists these days tie being happy to the physical things we won’t ever take with us. Experiences enrich our souls. Having this deep gratitude to be able to just create things that resonate with people I feel really sets me apart.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve lived in New York City most of my life before moving to Jersey and buying a house 20 minutes from midtown. There is so much to do and as someone who really has no real dislikes of people’s tastes and choices, is difficult to settle on just 1. Saggio’s Italian Restaurant has the best spicy black squid ink pasta plate. Central Park skating rink in the winter saves you from the masses of Rockefeller’s rink. Black Fat Pussy Cat and Wicked Willie’s makes for a great start to a fun night with beer pong and jazzy scenes. Barcelona bar on 8th avenue has the coolest theme songs (getting the Harry Potter shot comes with a wand and a sorting hat. RPM Karaoke bar is a place where singing that makes you feel a little embarassed is ttally welcomed! Sad songs and a few delicious drinks later, and you’ll feel right at home. The best drunken noodles I’ve ever had at 4:30 am in the morning is right outside the manhattan bridge in the lower east side. St Mark’s place, right around the corner, is a place one can spend all day at. Dyckman street “Platano Packing District” is where you’ll get a splash of contemporary Dominican culture, with places like Republica and Mamasushi/Mamajuana, there is a latin tropical vibe for all.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Surround yourself with people that know you to be the person you feel you are. With that, I have to say I’ve worked really hard in making my environment transparent enough that I don’t have to worry about who I am or how I come across. I set my intentions to everyone around me and it opens me up to just take everyone in as they are. And everyone plays a part, starting with my my core, my family, the force field that allows me to live as I am. My mother put my on stage with the Dominican legend, Juan Luis Guerra, at 4 years old as part of his children’s choir, and that was when I knew this is what I was put on this earth to do. She used to take me to auditions all the way to Hershey Park and is the prime suspect of how some unreleased music made it out into the world, motive being her love for her son’s sound; my number one fan. My brother Matthew has been striving to voluntarily fill the role of the impassioned manager in disbelief that people don’t know of my existence. My father making sure the wheels outside of my music life keeps turning in an effort to keep my foundation steady, and my other siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends racing to be the first to like my content to “help the algorithm”. My colleagues at work that run to tell the DJ to play my song again. The beautiful lady from Germany who DM’d me to show me that I made the top of her 2024 Spotify wrapped. Everyone casts a different ray of light to highlight my purpose, which makes me feel fulfilled.
