We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is an essential factor in the journey and process. Without taking a chance on yourself, you miss out on what could be life-changing experiences and opportunities. I think we let the fear or doubt of not getting what we want from taking risks create a mental blockade that hinders us from obtaining what’s already seeking us.
Without taking on decisions and creating in ways I felt would have been different than mundane or risky, I don’t think I would be able to be where I am, even being able to tell and explain through this interview. Every choice we make leads to some point or moment in time, but none of that is achievable without going through risky terrain.
I have felt risk the most through times I am putting forth new art; any time the spark of an idea comes for a project, I think that it is me taking a risk, putting a bet on myself to bring forth what began as just a thought, to something myself and my audience gets to see; displaying my passion and method of interpreting thoughts and ideas visually.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Initially, I was always interested in visual arts, primarily photo, cinematography, and editing. My earliest accounts of my passion were creating stop-motion edits off Windows Movie Maker with my 4th Gen. iPod Touch. I did not pursue it intentionally until my years of High School, where I would receive my first camera, a Canon T6.
Over time, I did not know my style of photography or what look I wanted to portray. I would eventually adopt a “dream” aesthetic, and understanding lighting aspects from a film background allowed me to combine the aesthetic with a cinematic touch, thus giving forth a look that I feel differentiates itself from other respected artists.
The path I have created and am still journeying has been filled with unpredictabilities that my past self could not have imagined would unfold in such a way. I feel my tenacity and ambition to create with my heart’s intent and be as genuine as possible to all around me: collaborators, clients, connections, acquaintances, friends, and family; those factors, as well as divine timing and efficient dedication to my crafts all led to where I am in my profession now.
The lessons learned have been many in hand;
I have learned never to underestimate my worth.
There is no better or worse, only different.
To live by differentiation and not comparison.
Those disciplines and many more lessons helped shape me to advance professionally and creatively as an artist and human being. I am still humble enough to acknowledge that I am still growing and do not have all of the answers figured out, but I am confident in my actions, the people I inspire, who show me support and are here for my art and craft; those individuals and the rewards of my actions show me that I am on the right path in what I do.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
