We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua & Caitlin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua & Caitlin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We both come from photojournalism backgrounds, and while Caitlin made a change in her career path after news reporting since her undergraduate years, Joshua remains in the photojournalism field of work. Throughout his career, he has become a multi-award-winning photojournalist. In 2023, through our shared passion to tell stories and our love for love, we decided to start our small wedding and photography business in Athens, Georgia. We knew our background in photojournalism would only heighten our expertise in the field. Our business has grown beyond what we could have imagined these last few months, and we continue to be grateful for those who have supported us since the very first day.

What should our readers know about your business?
Newtown Photography Co. is a wedding and engagement photography business based in Athens, Georgia. While we continue to service our local couples, we are open to traveling anywhere in the United States or abroad! Our goal is to empower nontraditional lovers to be unapologetically themselves through our photography services. We capture the essence of your special moments and turn them into timeless memories that you will cherish for generations to come. Our style is a mix of documentary photojournalism with a modern, true-to-color twist.

Our business journey has had its up and downs, like most small businesses, but we have been graced with the support of our community from the very first day. Neither one of us had business experience, so our initial struggle when building our business from the ground up was learning the business side of things. We knew our way around the camera, and Caitlin had extensive knowledge in social media marketing, but the real struggle was navigating the crazy world of LLCs, business insurance, and all the in-betweens. Thankfully, we had each other to lean as we figured things out.

Our business is LGBTQ+ friendly and provides a safe and comfortable space for all. Since 2023, our business has sponsored and donated services to the Boybutante AIDS Foundation. We stand behind their mission to provide resources and support to individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The best thing about Athens, Georgia, is its diverse culture when it comes to places to eat, drink, and hangout. Our most favorite weekly hangout spot is the Athens Farmers Market at Bishop Park, held every Saturday morning, but our go-tos for other days of the week include North Campus and Watson Mill Bridge State Park. Our go-to place for brunch is Mama’s Boy — it is a must visit restaurant while you are in town! We also highly recommend seeing a show at the 40 Watt Club. If you are hungry for dinner, we recommend grabbing a slice of pizza at Little Italy or a burger at The Grill in Downtown Athens, or if you don’t want to eat in Downtown, we love what they are cooking over at Pulaski Heights BBQ.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, our success would not be what it is without the support of our family and friends, and we are forever grateful for their continued support as we navigate life as small business owners. We thank our former and current couples who trusted us to document their special day, and we thank our community who have shown nothing but support since we first started our business. We also would not be the photographers we are today had it not been for our University of Georgia Grady College Professor Mark Johnson, who taught us the basics of everything we know about capturing the perfect moment, and we would also like to thank University of North Georgia Professor Dan Cabaniss for igniting our passion for journalism.
