We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseé Muldrew and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseé, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
The Looking Glass JM, LLC. helps the community, specifically Black Indigenous and People of Color, by connecting them to culturally informed content, providing free mental health resources, and offering trainings and products that promote trauma-informed care. As a Black woman and counselor, I learned quickly the many barriers that exist that prevent traditionally marginalized groups from accessing quality care. Whether those limitations are cultural stigma, financial concerns, or lack of representation among providers there has been a gap that exists when it comes to wellness equity. The Looking Glass strives to bridge that gap by fostering a space to create community and amplify the voices and lived experiences of the BIPOC community. Our business provides monthly blogs that focus on mental wellness, in addition to a ‘Find & Seek’ tab that houses free downloadable workbooks that explore concepts such as identity negotiation, inner child work for parents, affirmations, and self-care. The vision behind ‘Find & Seek’ is to highlight an alternate understanding of the common phrase “seek and you shall find”. Ordinarily, we are told to seek things out in order to find answers. However, we know that historically BIPOC members have faced countless barriers that prevent them from even taking the first step of seeking out mental health services. By leading with the word ‘Find’, it creates opportunity for BIPOC individuals to experience what it is like for wellness equity to find them and meet them where they are. Once community and resources are found, it increases the likelihood that they will seek out further information to support and enhance their healing journey.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I’m an Associate Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia. I specialize in providing trauma-informed and culturally responsive care to children, adolescents, and adults. I previously worked as a school-based SAMHSA therapist providing counseling services for a range of mental health issues to middle-school aged students. I currently work in higher education as a clinical case manager providing crisis intervention, conducting biopsychosocial assessments, and connecting them to the appropriate mental health resources. I am also the founder of The Looking Glass through which I provide various trainings for organizations and I am the author of a newly published guided journal entitled Beyond My Reflection: A 60-Day Guided Journal to Cultivate Self-Awareness and Honor Your Truths.

The guided journal I created focuses on self-discovery and healing. It is a writing space that explores 6 domains of self-concept including Validation, Comparison, Appearance, Competence, Family, and Culture. Writing has been a healing practice for me and so I am so excited to offer a product through my shop that can create that same sense of safety and healing for others.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Whew, where to begin! Well first and foremost I have to give God all the glory and recognition in my story. I am constantly in awe of the way my different life experiences have been so interconnected and led me to be the recipient of so much love and grace. I have truly been surrounded by a village my entire life and they have helped equip me with the tools I need to be successful in my business and personal life. My village has offered me mentorship, sisterhood, prayer partners, and many other things that have pushed me to believe in myself on my hardest days. I wish I had the time to name each person individually but just know that if you are a part of my village, I am so immensely grateful for you. I have to take a moment to give a shoutout to my previous clients and mentees, who without a doubt have been some of my greatest inspirations along my journey. I have had the privilege to share space with so many individuals, young and old, and listen to the story of their struggle and resilience. Our therapeutic alliance and witnessing the progress that these clients have made has often served as a reminder and encouragement that the work I do matters and is necessary.
